Provides eligibility for retired law officer's special license plates to law officers who retire due to injures sustained in the line of duty regardless of the length of employment. (8/1/2020) 1 AN ACT 2 To amend and reenact R.S. 47:463.24(D), relative to special motor vehicle license plates for 3 retired law officers; to provide with respect to the criteria for eligibility for a retired 4 law officer's special license plate; to add eligibility for law officers injured in the line 5 of duty who retired for medical reasons due to permanent injuries sustained in the 6 line of duty regardless of length of employment to persons eligible for a retired law 7 officer's special license plate; and to provide for related matters. 8 Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana: 9 Section 1. R.S. 47:463.24(D) is hereby amended and reenacted to read as follows: 10 ยง463.24. Special license plates for retired law officers 11 * * * 12 D. Any person who was employed as a law officer for twelve years or more, 13 was not discharged for misconduct related to employment, and has not been 14 convicted of any felony, or any person who was employed as a law officer and 15 retired for medical reasons due to permanent injuries sustained in the line of 16 duty regardless of length of employment, shall be eligible for a special license 17 plate under the provisions of this Section and renewal of such special license plate, Page 1 of 2 Coding: Words which are struck through are deletions from existing law; words in boldface type and underscored are additions. DIGEST SB 226 Original 2020 Regular Session Hensgens Present law requires that the secretary of the DPS&C establish special motor vehicle license plates which may be issued, upon application, to any citizen of Louisiana who is a retired law officer. Present law further provides that any person who was employed as a law officer for 12 years or more, was not discharged for misconduct related to employment, and has not been convicted of any felony, shall be eligible for a special motor vehicle license plate regardless of whether or not that person is a member of, or is receiving retirement benefits from, a retirement system for law officers. Proposed law retains present law and adds that any person who was employed as a law officer and retired for medical reasons due to permanent injuries sustained in the line of duty regardless of the length of employment shall be eligible for a special motor vehicle license plate for retired law officers.
