Present law provides for the protection of all personally identifiable student information, with certain
exceptions.
Proposed law provides that, notwithstanding any provision of present law, the governing authority
of each public school shall adopt a policy that allows a student's parent or legal guardian to authorize
a person to access information related to his child's educational and discipline records and discuss
this information with principals, teachers, and other school personnel, provided such authorization
is in writing. Further requires that a copy of the written authorization be kept on file at the school
in which the student is enrolled.
Effective upon signature of the governor or lapse of time for gubernatorial action.
