(8/1/20) 1 AN ACT 2 To amend and reenact R.S. 47:490.3(A) and (D), relative to military honor license plates; 3 to provide for eligibility for members who have been honorably discharged from the 4 Louisiana National Guard; to provide relative to renewal of military honor plates; 5 and to provide for related matters. 6 Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana: 7 Section 1. R.S. 47:490.3(A) and (D) are hereby amended and reenacted to read as 8 follows: 9 ยง490.3. Military honor license plates for members of the Louisiana National Guard 10 A. The secretary of the Department of Public Safety and Corrections shall 11 establish military honor license plates for passenger cars, pickup trucks, vans, 12 motorcycles, recreational vehicles, and motor homes that may be issued to any active 13 member of the Louisiana National Guard or any member who has been honorably 14 discharged from the Louisiana National Guard upon such member's application. 15 The license plate shall bear either the official emblem of the guard or the letters 16 "LANG" followed by such numbers as the secretary finds expedient, and he shall 17 establish such rules and regulations as are necessary. The adjutant general is authorized to recognize not more than one hundred 3 personal staff members, battalion commanders, directors of various facilities, full 4 colonels and above, and others by designating the issue of military honor license 5 plates numbered "1" through "100". The adjutant general is responsible for 6 furnishing the secretary necessary information to effect issue of the plates. The 7 secretary shall issue replacement plates for those military honor license plates so 8 surrendered. Upon termination of status as a member of the Louisiana National 9 Guard, a member with less than twenty years of service shall surrender the military 10 honor plates provided for herein to the secretary. A Any member with twenty years 11 or more of service in good standing shall continue to have the option to renew his 12 military honor plates annually. DIGEST SB 427 Original 2020 Regular Session Bouie Present law (R.S. 47:490.3) requires the secretary of the Dept. of Public Safety and Corrections to establish military honor license plates for passenger cars, pickup trucks, vans, motorcycles, recreational vehicles, and motor homes that may be issued to any active member of the Louisiana National Guard upon such member's application. Proposed law adds eligibility for members who have been honorably discharged from the Louisiana National Guard and otherwise retains present law. Present law requires a member with fewer than 20 years of service to surrender military honor plates to the secretary upon termination of status as a member of the Louisiana National Guard. Proposed law repeals present law. Present law authorizes a member with twenty years or more of service in good standing to continue to have the option to renew his military honor plates annually. Proposed law authorizes any member in good standing to continue to have the option to renew his military honor plates annually. Effective August 1, 2020.
