2020 Regular Session ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 17 BY SENATOR HENRY A RESOLUTION To commend Elizabeth Drennan, a junior at Louise S. McGehee School, on being named a Distinguished Finalist for the 2020 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program, designating her as one of the top youth volunteers in Louisiana for 2020. WHEREAS, Elizabeth Drennan, a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, was nominated for the Prudential Spirit of Community Award, which is the largest youth recognition program based solely on volunteer service in the United States; and WHEREAS, Ms. Drennan is a student leader of Hearts of Passion, an organization that offers a week-long summer camp experience to teenagers suffering with cancer; and WHEREAS, in her volunteer capacity with Hearts of Passion, Elizabeth Drennan has helped plan fundraising events, assisted in establishing partnerships with local businesses, and identified prospective participants; and WHEREAS, Ms. Drennan also helped facilitate the camp events, which included a breakfast at the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas, a steamboat party on the Mississippi River, and a scavenger hunt through the French Quarter; and WHEREAS, the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards are given in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) and are designed to emphasize the importance the nation places on service to others and encouraging all young Americans to contribute to their communities; and WHEREAS, the NASSP was established in 1916 with the aim of promoting excellence in school leadership at the middle and high school levels; its activities focus on providing resources and professional development programs for the entire school leadership team, serving its 27,000 members in the U.S. and forty-four other countries; and Page 1 of 2 SR NO. 17 ENROLLED WHEREAS, Prudential is celebrating its twenty-fifth year of involvement with these unique awards, encouraging volunteer involvement among American teenagers and Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Prudential Financial, Inc., Charles Lowrey, reflected that, "We are as inspired as ever by the work students are doing to address the needs of a changing world"; and WHEREAS, Mr. Lowery went on to say that, "We hope that their resolve, their initiative, and their perspectives on society's challenges move others to consider how they can make a difference, too"; and WHEREAS, the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards are open to nominations from all public and private middle and high schools in the country, as well as Girl Scout councils, 4-H organizations, American Red Cross chapters, YMCAs, and Points of Light Global Network member organizations; and WHEREAS, Elizabeth Drennan is an inspiring example to her fellow students and her influence will resonate with those students and adults who are considering involvement in their community as a hands-on participant in making their communities serve all those living there and bringing to life the American dream and its commitment to volunteerism and community activism. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Elizabeth Drennan, a junior at Louise S. McGehee School, on being named a Distinguished Finalist for the 2020 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, designating her as one of the top youth volunteers in Louisiana for 2020.
