FISH/FISHING.  Provides relative to taking shrimp in Lake Pontchartrain. (8/1/21)
1	AN ACT
2 To amend and reenact R.S. 56:499.4, relative to night shrimping; to prohibit taking shrimp
3 at night in certain inside waters; to provide for exceptions; and to provide for related
4 matters.
5 Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
6 Section 1. R.S. 56:499.4 is hereby amended and reenacted to read as follows: 
7 ยง499.4. Night shrimping; inside waters; Vermilion Bay; East and West Cote
8	Blanche Bays; Atchafalaya Bay; Lake Pontchartrain; exceptions;
9	prohibition
10	A. No person shall take shrimp at night, from one-half hour after official
11 sunset until one-half hour before official sunrise, from the inside waters of the
12 following water bodies:
13	(1) Vermilion Bay, West Cote Blanche Bay, East Cote Blanche Bay, and
14 Atchafalaya Bay, from the western shore of Vermilion Bay to the western shore of
15 the Atchafalaya River and the Atchafalaya River Ship Channel out to Eugene Island,
16 as described by the inside-outside line in R.S. 56:495, except that.
17	(2) Lake Pontchartrain west of Interstate Highway 10.

1	B. Notwithstanding the provisions of Subsection A of this Section, night
2 shrimping shall be allowed in the waters of Southwest Pass at Marsh Island south of
3 a line drawn from the following points: the most southeastward point of Southwest
4 Pass at 29 degrees 36 minutes 47 seconds north latitude, 92 degrees 00 minutes 32
5 seconds west longitude east southeast to the Green Light Channel Marker Number
6 21 at 29 degrees 36 minutes 44 seconds north latitude, 92 degrees 00 minutes 21
7 seconds west longitude; thence northeast to a point located at 29 degrees 37 minutes
8 34 seconds north latitude, 91 degrees 59 minutes 36 seconds west longitude; thence
9 southeast to the western shore of Big Charles Bayou at 29 degrees 36 minutes 43
10 seconds north latitude, 91 degrees 59 minutes 17 seconds west longitude.

Present law prohibits nighttime taking of shrimp in certain coastal waters, except such taking
is authorized in the waters of Southwest Pass at Marsh Island past a line delineated in the
law.
Proposed law retains present law and also prohibits nighttime taking of shrimp in Lake
Pontchartrain west of Interstate Highway 10.
Effective August 1, 2021.
