Expresses condolences upon the death of Dr. David Buttross Jr. 1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION 2 To express the sincere condolences of the Legislature of Louisiana upon the death of 3 Dr. David Buttross Jr., a distinguished gentleman, devout Christian, educator, Army 4 Veteran and well-known internist and cardiologist. 5 WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the members of the 6 Legislature of Louisiana have learned of the passing of Dr. David Buttross Jr., on 7 January 17, 2021, at the age of ninety-five; and 8 WHEREAS, Dr. Buttross was born on November 8, 1925, in Gulfport, Mississippi, 9 to Freada and David Buttross Sr.; and 10 WHEREAS, he attended Mississippi State University for only eighteen months 11 before he was accepted to Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans; 12 and 13 WHEREAS, after he graduated from medical school in 1948, Dr. Buttross continued 14 his studies as an intern at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida; and 15 WHEREAS, he proudly served as a volunteer in the United States Army Medical 16 Corps and as a captain in the United States Army during the occupation of Japan; and 17 WHEREAS, upon his return to the United States, Dr. Buttross completed his medical 18 residency at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, serving as chief medical resident during his Page 1 of 3 SCR NO. 11 SLS 21RS-60 ORIGINAL 1 final year; and 2 WHEREAS, in 1953, he moved to Lake Charles and joined the Lake Charles Medical 3 and Surgical Clinic where he practiced medicine for over fifty years; and 4 WHEREAS, in addition to caring for patients in his medical practice, he authored 5 medical papers published in various medical journals, and was an active member in many 6 organizations, including the American Board of Internal Medicine, the American College 7 of Cardiology, and the Louisiana Society of Internal Medicine; and 8 WHEREAS, Dr. Buttross was instrumental in planning the first coronary care units 9 for St. Patrick Hospital and Lake Charles Memorial Hospital; and 10 WHEREAS, in 1999, Dr. Buttross received the prestigious Laureate Award from the 11 Louisiana Chapter of the American College of Physicians for his commitment to excellence 12 in medical care, education, and service to the community; and 13 WHEREAS, Dr. Buttross was very active in civic, religious, and community affairs; 14 he was a member of the Lake Charles Chamber of Commerce, the United Way, the 15 Calcasieu Marine National Bank, The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher, the Cathedral 16 of Immaculate Conception, and many other religious and civic organizations; and 17 WHEREAS, after fifty years of dedicated service to his patients and community, in 18 2006, Dr. Buttross retired from medicine at the age of eighty-one and lived his life to the 19 fullest and particularly enjoyed playing golf, one of his favorite pastimes; and 20 WHEREAS, no matter the endeavor, nothing was more important to him than his 21 family; and 22 WHEREAS, left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of sixty-two years, Joyce; 23 their children, Lily Zaunbrecher, Dr. Melanie Buttross, Dr. David Buttross III and Charlotte 24 Scott; thirteen grandchildren; and his sister, Fran Payne; and 25 WHEREAS, Dr. Buttross was a man of God whose moral compass never wavered, 26 and he will be missed by all those who knew him. 27 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 28 respectfully acknowledge with gratitude the service to country, community, and family of 29 Dr. David Buttross Jr., a distinguished gentlemen, devout Christian, Army Veteran, and 30 well-known internist and cardiologist and extends sincere regrets and condolences to his Page 2 of 3 SCR NO. 11 SLS 21RS-60 ORIGINAL 1 family on the occasion of his death. 2 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to his 3 wife, Mrs. Joyce Abraham Buttross.
