SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 11

A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
To express the sincere condolences of the Legislature of Louisiana upon the death of
Dr. David Buttross Jr., a distinguished gentleman, devout Christian, educator, Army
Veteran, and well-known internist and cardiologist.
WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the members of the
Legislature of Louisiana have learned of the passing of Dr. David Buttross Jr. on January 17,
2021, at the age of ninety-five; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Buttross was born on November 8, 1925, in Gulfport, Mississippi,
to Freada and David Buttross Sr.; and
WHEREAS, he attended Mississippi State University for only eighteen months
before he was accepted to Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans;
and
WHEREAS, after he graduated from medical school in 1948, Dr. Buttross continued
his studies as an intern at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida; and
WHEREAS, he proudly served as a volunteer in the United States Army Medical
Corps and as a captain in the United States Army during the occupation of Japan; and
WHEREAS, upon his return to the United States, Dr. Buttross completed his medical
residency at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, serving as chief medical resident during his
final year; and
WHEREAS, in 1953, he moved to Lake Charles and joined the Lake Charles Medical
and Surgical Clinic where he practiced medicine for over fifty years; and
WHEREAS, in addition to caring for patients in his medical practice, he authored
medical papers published in various medical journals, and was an active member in many
organizations, including the American Board of Internal Medicine, the American College
of Cardiology, and the Louisiana Society of Internal Medicine; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Buttross was instrumental in planning the first coronary care units
for St. Patrick Hospital and Lake Charles Memorial Hospital; and
WHEREAS, in 1999, Dr. Buttross received the prestigious Laureate Award from the
Louisiana Chapter of the American College of Physicians for his commitment to excellence
in medical care, education, and service to the community; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Buttross was very active in civic, religious, and community affairs;
he was a member of the Lake Charles Chamber of Commerce, the United Way, the
Calcasieu Marine National Bank, The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher, the Cathedral
of Immaculate Conception, and many other religious and civic organizations; and
WHEREAS, after fifty years of dedicated service to his patients and community, in
2006, Dr. Buttross retired from medicine at the age of eighty-one and lived his life to the
fullest and particularly enjoyed playing golf, one of his favorite pastimes; and
WHEREAS, no matter the endeavor, nothing was more important to him than his
family; and
WHEREAS, left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of sixty-two years, Joyce;
their children, Lily Zaunbrecher, Dr. Melanie Buttross, Dr. David Buttross III, and Charlotte
Scott; thirteen grandchildren; and his sister, Fran Payne; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Buttross was a man of God whose moral compass never wavered,
and he will be missed by all those who knew him.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
respectfully acknowledge with gratitude the service to country, community, and family of
Dr. David Buttross Jr., a distinguished gentlemen, devout Christian, Army Veteran, and
well-known internist and cardiologist, and extends sincere regrets and condolences to his
family on the occasion of his death.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to his
wife, Mrs. Joyce Abraham Buttross.
