Expresses condolences upon the death of Clifford Lee "Cliff" Newman. 1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION 2 To express the sincere condolences of the Legislature of Louisiana upon the death of 3 Clifford Lee "Cliff" Newman, veteran of the United States Air Force, attorney, 4 former state senator, and devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. 5 WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the Legislature of 6 Louisiana learned of the death of former State Senator Clifford Lee "Cliff" Newman who 7 passed away peacefully from this life on November 20, 2020, at the age of seventy-eight; 8 and 9 WHEREAS, Mr. Newman was born on October 11, 1942, in Sulphur, Louisiana, to 10 Eulice and Eliza Newman; and 11 WHEREAS, after graduating from LaGrange High School in 1960, he enlisted in the 12 United States Air Force and served his country for four years; and 13 WHEREAS, upon returning home from his military service, Mr. Newman pursued 14 his education, graduating from McNeese State University and Loyal University New Orleans 15 College of Law; and 16 WHEREAS, in 1971, he established his law practice in Lake Charles, where he 17 enjoyed a successful career for nearly fifty years; and 18 WHEREAS, after practicing law for a couple of years, political office piqued his Page 1 of 2 SCR NO. 13 SLS 21RS-106 ORIGINAL 1 interest, and at the age of thirty-one, Mr. Newman became the youngest-ever elected 2 member of the Lake Charles City Council; and 3 WHEREAS, in 1980, Mr. Newman was elected to the Louisiana Senate to represent 4 District 26 and served his constituency well for two terms; and 5 WHEREAS, in addition to his public service, Mr. Newman was an active member 6 of the Jaycees, holding many leadership positions in the organization, including president 7 of the Louisiana Jaycees, vice president of the United States Jaycees, and vice president of 8 the Jaycees International; and 9 WHEREAS, Clifford Lee "Cliff" Newman is survived by his three children, Julie 10 Newman Johnson, Laurie Michelle Newman, and Jonathan Blake Newman; three step 11 children, Summer Craig Dooley, Spring Nicole Guillory, and Edward Anthony Guillory; 12 twelve grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, three brothers, one sister, and a host of nieces 13 and nephews; and 14 WHEREAS, Mr. Newman touched and inspired the lives of many people by giving 15 of his time freely to his family, his friends, and community and will be missed dearly by all 16 who knew him. 17 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 18 express sincere condolences upon the passing of Clifford Lee "Cliff" Newman, veteran of 19 the United States Air Force, attorney, former state senator, and devoted father, grandfather, 20 and great-grandfather. 21 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the 22 family of Clifford Lee "Cliff" Newman.
