2021 Regular Session ENROLLED SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 13 BY SENATOR JOHNS A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION To express the sincere condolences of the Legislature of Louisiana upon the death of Clifford Lee "Cliff" Newman, veteran of the United States Air Force, attorney, former state senator, and devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the Legislature of Louisiana learned of the death of former State Senator Clifford Lee "Cliff" Newman who passed away peacefully from this life on November 20, 2020, at the age of seventy-eight; and WHEREAS, Mr. Newman was born on October 11, 1942, in Sulphur, Louisiana, to Eulice and Eliza Newman; and WHEREAS, after graduating from LaGrange High School in 1960, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served his country for four years; and WHEREAS, upon returning home from his military service, Mr. Newman pursued his education, graduating from McNeese State University and Loyal University New Orleans College of Law; and WHEREAS, in 1971, he established his law practice in Lake Charles, where he enjoyed a successful career for nearly fifty years; and WHEREAS, after practicing law for a couple of years, political office piqued his interest, and at the age of thirty-one, Mr. Newman became the youngest-ever elected member of the Lake Charles City Council; and WHEREAS, in 1980, Mr. Newman was elected to the Louisiana Senate to represent District 26 and served his constituency well for two terms; and WHEREAS, in addition to his public service, Mr. Newman was an active member of the Jaycees, holding many leadership positions in the organization, including president of the Louisiana Jaycees, vice president of the United States Jaycees, and vice president of the Jaycees International; and Page 1 of 2 SCR NO. 13 ENROLLED WHEREAS, Clifford Lee "Cliff" Newman is survived by his three children, Julie Newman Johnson, Laurie Michelle Newman, and Jonathan Blake Newman; three stepchildren, Summer Craig Dooley, Spring Nicole Guillory, and Edward Anthony Guillory; twelve grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; his brothers, Curtiss Newman, Terry Lynn Newman, and Raleigh Newman; his sister, Joyce Newman Cooper; and a host of nieces and nephews; and WHEREAS, Mr. Newman touched and inspired the lives of many people by giving of his time freely to his family, his friends, and community and will be missed dearly by all who knew him. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby express sincere condolences upon the passing of Clifford Lee "Cliff" Newman, veteran of the United States Air Force, attorney, former state senator, and devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
