2021 Regular Session ENROLLED SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 35 BY SENATOR JOHNS A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION To express the sincere condolences of the Legislature of Louisiana upon the death of Ann Theresa "Nancy" Mellody Valluzzo. WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the members of the Legislature of Louisiana have learned of the passing of Ann Theresa "Nancy" Mellody Valluzzo, at the age of eighty, after a brief and courageous battle with cancer, which, as with every other challenge in her life, she approached with pragmatism and tenacity; and WHEREAS, Nancy was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, to John and Clare Mellody on January 20, 1940, and was raised in Battle Creek, Michigan, where she met her lifelong love, Charles Valluzzo; and WHEREAS, Nancy and Charles can be seen in their second grade picture together at St. Phillips School, and receiving the Sacrament of Communion in that same year was a precursor to the multiple Sacraments they would lovingly share together; and WHEREAS, much like the lyric in Irish Eyes are Smiling, "… when Irish eyes are smiling, sure, they steal your heart away". Nancy did just that; she stole Charlie's heart; and WHEREAS, Nancy and Charlie attended school together through college at Western Michigan University and married in 1959; and WHEREAS, the love they shared together along with their strong Catholic Faith provided a foundation for generations as Nancy was the mother of John Valluzzo (wife Jan), Mary Rebecca Montes de Oca (husband Fermin), Timothy Valluzzo (wife Mary Kate), Christopher Valluzzo (wife Krista), and Patrick Valluzzo (wife Rebecca); and WHEREAS, she was the Nana/Nanny of nineteen grandchildren: Nicholas Valluzzo, Michael Valluzzo, FM Montes de Oca, Mellody Buford, Christina Pipes, Anthony Montes de Oca, Charles Valluzzo II, Mary Katherine Montes de Oca, Caroline Valluzzo, Mary Alexandra Montes de Oca, Virginia Valluzzo, Harrison Valluzzo, Murphy Valluzzo, Locke Valluzzo, Pierson Valluzzo, Sean Valluzzo, Clare Valluzzo, Gabriel Valluzzo, and Mary Emery Valluzzo, and great-grandmother of fifteen; and Page 1 of 2 SCR NO. 35 ENROLLED WHEREAS, from the day the family arrived in Baton Rouge, Nancy provided impactful leadership and commitment to the many organizations she was involved with: she was a Board Member of the American Diabetes Association of Baton Rouge, YWCO, and McMains Children's Development Center; and WHEREAS, she was the proud recipient of the Mother Seton Award for her tireless efforts at St. Thomas More School and Parish; and WHEREAS, Nancy's passion for her Irish heritage was evident in her home, her faith, and her cooking; on St. Patrick's Day it was common practice to relocate the "o" at the end of Valluzzo and move it to the front; and WHEREAS, she had many dear friends in life, Birthday Group, Bridge Group, Book Club, Destin Group, and more over the years; she loved to faithfully toast the sunset during Golden Hour; and WHEREAS, she was a voracious reader, an avid tennis player, an accomplished bridge player, and an incredible cook who loved to snow ski and play golf; and WHEREAS, she went by many names: Sweetsie, Mom, Nana/Nanny, and Nancy; she truly loved living life and will forever be missed; and WHEREAS, the death of Nancy Valluzzo has evoked a tremendous sense of loss within the Baton Rouge community, recalling her many years of public service and personal interactions - a remarkable and magnificent woman and a Baton Rouge treasure. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby express its heartfelt sympathies at the passing of Ann Theresa "Nancy" Mellody Valluzzo, an outstanding community servant; does hereby record for posterity her noteworthy contributions to Baton Rouge and to Louisiana; and does hereby express enduring gratitude for her life so devoted to the public good.
