2021 Regular Session ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 71 BY SENATOR BERNARD A RESOLUTION To commend Terry McAulay on receiving the 2021 Dave Dixon Louisiana Sports Leadership Award and being named to the 2021 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Induction Class. WHEREAS, the Dave Dixon Award is presented annually by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association's thirty-member Hall of Fame selection committee to an individual who has played a decisive role as a sports leader, administrator benefitting Louisiana, or bringing credit to Louisiana on the national or international level; and WHEREAS, the 2021 Dave Dixon Award is presented to Terry McAulay upon his induction into the 2021 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame; and WHEREAS, Terry McAulay, a Hammond native, remains one of just six officials to referee at least three Super Bowls; and WHEREAS, Mr. McAulay began his officiating career as a high school football and basketball game referee while attending Louisiana State University (LSU); and WHEREAS, in 1982, after graduating from LSU with a degree in computer science, he moved to the Baltimore area and began his career with the National Security Agency (NSA) working as a computer programmer and software engineer for twenty-six years until his retirement in 2008; and WHEREAS, in addition to working for the NSA, Mr. McAulay was a referee for some of the smaller collegiate leagues before he became a referee in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) from 1994 to 1997; and WHEREAS, in his last year of officiating for the ACC, he was a referee in the 1997 Bowl Championship Series title game that was played in the Orange Bowl; and Page 1 of 2 SR NO. 71 ENROLLED WHEREAS, in 1998, Mr. McAulay began his officiating career with the National Football League (NFL); and WHEREAS, he officiated a total of three hundred sixteen games in the NFL, with two hundred sixty-seven of those games as a referee of which seventeen were in the playoffs, and seven were in the National Football Championship or the American Football Championship; and WHEREAS, Mr. McAulay was the first referee to draw a Super Bowl assignment with fewer than five seasons as a referee; and WHEREAS, after only four seasons with the NFL, he was chosen to be the crew chief for Super Bowl XXXIX; and WHEREAS, Mr. McAulay served as crew chief for three Super Bowls: XXXIX (New England vs. Philadelphia), XLIII (Pittsburgh vs. Arizona), and XLVIII (Denver vs. Seattle); and WHEREAS, he was an NFL official for twenty seasons with just three seasons as a side judge and the final seventeen as a referee; and WHEREAS, in June 2018, after he retired from the NFL, Mr. McAulay became the on-air rules expert for NBC's Sunday Night Football and Notre Dame football telecasts; and WHEREAS, the influential and successful career of Terry McAulay has earned him the 2021 Dave Dixon Sports Leadership Award and his place among the many greats in the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Terry McAulay on receiving the 2021 Dave Dixon Louisiana Sports Leadership Award and being named to the 2021 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Induction Class.
