ENROLLED ACT No. 447 2022 Regular Session HOUSE BILL NO. 207 BY REPRESENTATIVES HUGHES, ADAMS, AMEDEE, BOYD, BRASS, ROBBY CARTER, WILFORD CARTER, CORMIER, COX, CREWS, DUPLESSIS, FISHER, FREIBERG, GAINES, GAROFALO, GREEN, HARRIS, JEFFERSON, JENKINS, TRAVIS JOHNSON, JORDAN, LANDRY, LARVADAIN, LYONS, DUSTIN MILLER, NEWELL, ORGERON, CHARLES OWEN, PIERRE, SCHEXNAYDER, SELDERS, STAGNI, AND WILLARD 1 AN ACT 2 To amend and reenact R.S. 17:183.3(B)(2)(b) and 5026(A)(2) and to enact R.S. 17:5026(D), 3 relative to curricula; to revise the courses required in the high school career major 4 program; to add Geometry as a required course; to provide for alignment with the 5 core curriculum required for qualification for a TOPS-Tech award; and to provide 6 for related matters. 7 Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana: 8 Section 1. R.S. 17:183.3(B)(2)(b) and 5026(A)(2) are hereby amended and reenacted 9 and R.S. 17:5026(D) is hereby enacted to read as follows: 10 §183.3. Career major; description; curriculum and graduation requirements 11 * * * 12 B. 13 * * * 14 (2) The course requirements for the career major shall consist of the 15 following: 16 * * * 17 (b) At least four mathematics credits, including Algebra I, Algebra I Part 18 One and Algebra I Part Two, or an applied or hybrid Algebra course, course; 19 Geometry or an applied Geometry course; and three two additional mathematics Page 1 of 4 CODING: Words in struck through type are deletions from existing law; words underscored are additions. HB NO. 207 ENROLLED 1 courses from among the following: Geometry, Math Essentials, Financial Literacy, 2 Business Math, Algebra II, Algebra III, Advanced Math - Functions and Statistics, 3 Advanced Math - Pre-Calculus, Pre-Calculus, or comparable Louisiana Technical 4 College courses offered by Jump Start regional teams as approved by the State Board 5 of Elementary and Secondary Education. Integrated Mathematics I, II, and III may 6 be substituted for Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II, and shall equal three 7 mathematics credits. 8 * * * 9 §5026. High school core curriculum requirements; TOPS-Tech 10 A. To be eligible for a TOPS-Tech Award pursuant to this Chapter, the 11 student shall have successfully completed the core curriculum requirements of R.S. 12 17:5025 or the core curriculum defined as follows: 13 * * * 14 (2) Math - Four Units 15 (a) Algebra I (one unit); , or both Algebra I, Part 1 and Algebra I, Part 2; , 16 or an applied or hybrid algebra course. HB NO. 207 ENROLLED 1 (a) English I. 2 (b) English II. 3 (c) Two or more units from the following: English III, English IV, AP or IB 4 English courses, Business English, Technical Writing, or comparable Louisiana 5 Technical College courses offered by Jump Start regional teams as approved by the 6 State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. 7 (2) Math - Four Units 8 (a) Algebra I (one unit); or both Algebra I, Part 1 and Algebra I, Part 2; or 9 an applied or hybrid algebra course. 10 (b) Three or more units from the following: Geometry, Algebra II, Math 11 Essentials, Financial Literacy, Business Math, Algebra III, Advanced Math - 12 Functions and Statistics, Advanced Math - Pre-Calculus, Pre-calculus, or comparable 13 Louisiana Technical College courses offered by Jump Start regional teams as 14 approved by the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. Integrated 15 Mathematics I, II, and III may be substituted for Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra 16 II, and shall equal three mathematics credits. 17 (3) Science - Two Units 18 (a) Biology. 19 (b) One unit from the following: Chemistry I, Earth Science, Environmental 20 Science, Agriscience I and Agriscience II (both for one unit), Physical Science, 21 Physics, or AP or IB science courses. 22 (4) Social Studies - Two Units 23 (a) One unit from the following: U.S. History, AP U.S. History, or IB U.S. 24 History. 25 (b) One unit from the following: Civics, Government, AP U.S. Government 26 and Politics: Comparative, or AP U.S. Government and Politics: United States. 27 (5) At least nine credits in Jump Start course sequences, workplace 28 experiences, and credentials. A student shall complete a regionally designed series 29 of Career and Technical Education Jump Start coursework and workplace-based 30 learning experiences leading to a statewide or regional Jump Start credential. HB NO. 207 ENROLLED 1 shall include courses and workplace experiences specific to the credential, courses 2 related to foundational career skills requirements in Jump Start, and other courses, 3 including career electives, that the Jump Start regional team determines are 4 appropriate for the career major. 5 Section 2. R.S. 17:183.3(B)(2)(b) as amended by this Act shall be applicable to 6 students entering high school during or after the 2023-2024 school year. R.S. 17:5026(A)(2) 7 as amended by this Act shall be applicable to students graduating from high school during 8 or after the 2026-2027 school year.
