SUPPLEMENTAL PAY: Provides relative to supplemental pay for tribal officers of the
Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana
1 AN ACT
2To amend and reenact R.S. 40:1667.1(A)(3)(a) and (F)(3), relative to supplemental pay for
3 tribal officers of the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana; to increase the number of tribal
4 officers eligible for supplemental pay; to remove certain limitations; to make
5 technical corrections; to provide for an effective date; and to provide for related
6 matters.
7Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
8 Section 1. R.S. 40:1667.1(A)(3)(a) and (F)(3) are hereby amended and reenacted to
9read as follows:
10 ยง1667.1. Rate of compensation; prior service; supplemental monthly compensation;

14 (3)(a) A municipality included in this Part or the Chitimacha Tribe of
15 Louisiana, the Coushatta Indian Tribe of Louisiana, or the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of
16 Louisiana may enhance the first-year salary of a law enforcement officer in the
17 amount equivalent to the state supplemental pay, or any portion thereof, that the
18 officer shall be entitled to be paid after one year of service pursuant to this Part.

3 (3) Notwithstanding any other provision of law to the contrary, the
4 compensation for tribal officers of the Coushatta Indian Tribe of Louisiana shall be
5 for no more than eight twenty such law enforcement officers, subject to approval by
6 the sheriff of Allen Parish.

8 Section 2. This Act shall become effective on July 1, 2023.

Abstract: Increases the number of tribal officers of the Coushatta Tribe of La. who are
eligible for supplemental pay from 8 to 20 and removes requirement for approval
of the sheriff of Allen Parish.
Present law provides for supplemental pay of $500 per month for any full-time police
officer paid by any municipality or by the Chitimacha Tribe of La., Coushatta Tribe of
La., or the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of La. who has passed a council-certified training
program and completed one year of service.
Present law limits the number of tribal officers from the Chitimacha Tribe, Coushatta
Tribe, and the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe who are eligible for supplemental pay. Limits the
number of tribal officers of the Coushatta Tribe of La. to 8, subject to approval of the
sheriff of Allen Parish.
Proposed law increases the number of eligible tribal officers of the Coushatta Tribe of
La. from 8 to 20, and removes the requirement for approval of the sheriff of Allen Parish.
Effective July 1, 2023.
