ENROLLED 2022 Regular Session HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 52 BY REPRESENTATIVE CARPENTER A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION To recognize Wednesday, April 6, 2022, as Southern University Day at the state capitol. WHEREAS, Southern University and A&M College was chartered in April 1880 by the General Assembly of the State of Louisiana; as such, the university recently celebrated its one hundred forty-second anniversary of providing opportunities for students of all backgrounds to achieve a high-quality, global educational experience; and WHEREAS, the Southern University Law Center opened its doors in September 1947 and is celebrating its seventy-fifth anniversary; and WHEREAS, the Southern University Laboratory School, which began operating in September 1922, will be celebrating its centennial anniversary this year; the school is also celebrating the recent Division IV state championship victories of both the boys' and girls' basketball teams; and WHEREAS, the Southern University System is the only Historically Black College and University system and includes Southern University at New Orleans, Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge, Southern University Law Center, Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center, and Southern University at Shreveport; and WHEREAS, Southern University and A&M College has been designated as a Carnegie R2 institution with "high research activity," the second-highest classification for American research universities, and is ranked on the U.S. News and World Report list of the top twenty HBCUs in the nation; and WHEREAS, Southern University serves a unique and diverse campus population through the nurturing, creative, and holistic development of its students; the university strives to prepare its students to become future entrepreneurs, visionaries, collaborators, and Page 1 of 3 HCR NO. 52 ENROLLED lifelong learners who are prepared to meet the needs and contribute to the success of the global workforce; and WHEREAS, Southern University provides models of excellence in diversity, education, research, workforce solutions, and universal engagement by embracing its land- grant principle and thereby effecting change in and around the school's community; and WHEREAS, Southern University is a trailblazer among Historically Black Colleges and Universities with a global network of thousands of successful alumni with diverse professional backgrounds who are positively and significantly contributing to society in both the public and private sector, including twenty-eight members of the Legislature of Louisiana; and WHEREAS, Southern University is a tremendous asset to the state of Louisiana, the nation, and the entire world, and it is also an economic engine that drives growth in its communities; and WHEREAS, Southern University is truly dedicated to meaningful public service and community engagement; it strives to enhance academic experiences and promote the common good through meaningful partnerships and projects aimed at improving the quality of life for others and by working to make a positive impact in the civic lives of those who live in the communities where we work and live; and WHEREAS, the Southern University Board of Supervisors is vested with the responsibility of managing and supervising the Southern University System's institutions of higher education, statewide agricultural programs, and other programs, and Southern University's mission is aligned with the Board of Regents's master plan for higher education; and WHEREAS, Southern University is a truly invaluable asset to Louisiana, and the state is proud of all that the university system has accomplished. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize Wednesday, April 6, 2022, as Southern University Day at the state capitol and does hereby express sincerest wishes that the university system continue its inspiring work.
