HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 12

HEALTH/CANCER:  Recognizes March 21, 2022, as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Day at
the state capitol
1	A RESOLUTION
2To recognize Monday, March 21, 2022, as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Day at the state
3 capitol.
4 WHEREAS, in Louisiana, cancer is ranked as the second highest cause of death; and
5 WHEREAS, in 2022, there will be 28,680 new cancer cases and nearly 10,000 deaths
6in Louisiana, according to estimates; and
7 WHEREAS, in Louisiana, the mortality rate from cancer is well above the national
8average, and one of the reasons colorectal cancer has such a high mortality rate is that an
9estimated forty percent of all at-risk individuals have never been screened; and
10 WHEREAS, colorectal cancer is a highly preventable, treatable, and survivable form
11of cancer, especially when it is diagnosed early; and
12 WHEREAS, screening for colorectal cancer should happen for everyone between the
13ages of 45 and 75; and
14 WHEREAS, the Louisiana Department of Health, along with the Mary Bird Perkins
15Cancer Center, has set a goal of increasing screenings by two percentage points in 2022, to
16reduce colorectal cancer rates through education and outreach, and to make screenings more
17accessible for at-risk individuals; and
18 WHEREAS, the Louisiana state capitol will serve as the official kick-off location for
19this effort.

1 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
2Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize Monday, March 21, 2022, as Colorectal
3Cancer Awareness Day at the state capitol.
4 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the
5Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center and to the secretary of the Louisiana Department of
6Health.
