HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 12
BY REPRESENTATIVE MCKNIGHT
A RESOLUTION
To recognize Monday, March 21, 2022, as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Day at the state
capitol.
WHEREAS, in Louisiana, cancer is ranked as the second highest cause of death; and
WHEREAS, in 2022, there will be 28,680 new cancer cases and nearly 10,000 deaths
in Louisiana, according to estimates; and
WHEREAS, in Louisiana, the mortality rate from cancer is well above the national
average, and one of the reasons colorectal cancer has such a high mortality rate is that an
estimated forty percent of all at-risk individuals have never been screened; and
WHEREAS, colorectal cancer is a highly preventable, treatable, and survivable form
of cancer, especially when it is diagnosed early; and
WHEREAS, screening for colorectal cancer should happen for everyone between the
ages of 45 and 75; and
WHEREAS, the Louisiana Department of Health, along with the Mary Bird Perkins
Cancer Center, has set a goal of increasing screenings by two percentage points in 2022, to
reduce colorectal cancer rates through education and outreach, and to make screenings more
accessible for at-risk individuals; and
WHEREAS, the Louisiana state capitol will serve as the official kick-off location for
this effort.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
