Allows district public defenders, their employees, and contract attorneys to participate in programs sponsored by the Office of Group Benefits under certain circumstances. (1/1/23) 1 AN ACT 2 To enact R.S. 42:808(A)(12), relative to the Office of Group Benefits; to provide for 3 participation in programs sponsored by the Office of Group Benefits by employees 4 and attorneys of in a district public defender office; and to provide for related 5 matters. 6 Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana: 7 Section 1. R.S. 42:808(A)(12) is hereby enacted to read as follows: 8 ยง808. Eligibility in group programs 9 A. For the purposes of participating in life, health, or other programs 10 sponsored by the Office of Group Benefits, an employee is defined as: 11 * * * 12 (12) Notwithstanding any provision of law to the contrary, every district 13 public defender employed by the Louisiana Public Defender Board, district 14 employees, and attorneys employed by the district may participate in programs 15 sponsored by the Office of Group Benefits, provided the public defender, 16 district employee, and attorney employed by the district pay only the employee 17 portion of the premium under the program. This Act shall become effective on January 1, 2023; if vetoed by the 3 governor and subsequently approved by the legislature, this Act shall become effective on 4 the day following such approval by the legislature or January 1, 2023, whichever is later. Proposed law authorizes every district public defender employed by the Louisiana Public Defender Board, district employees, and attorneys employed by the district to participate in programs sponsored by the Office of Group Benefits, provided the public defender, district employee, and attorney employed by the district pay only the employee portion of the premium charged under the program.
