Commends the Shreveport Little Theatre on the occasion of its 100 th consecutive season. 1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION 2 To commend the Shreveport Little Theatre on the occasion of its one hundredth consecutive 3 season of live theatrical production. 4 WHEREAS, the Shreveport Little Theatre was founded in 1922, staging its first 5 performance, The Maker of Dreams, at the Shreveport City Hall Auditorium; and 6 WHEREAS, founders Olivia Allen, Opal Woodley Parten, and Julia Elstner Rogers 7 introduced a new type of performance art known as "little theatre" to Shreveport, providing 8 new and experimental opportunities for writers, actors, and audiences alike; and 9 WHEREAS, having staged live productions every year without interruption since the 10 early twentieth century, the Shreveport Little Theatre, also known as "SLT", is one of the 11 oldest continuously operating theatres of its kind in the United States; and 12 WHEREAS, SLT originally opened its landmark theatre at 812 Margaret Place on 13 March 14, 1927, but multiple Shreveport locations have served as production venues 14 throughout its history, including City Hall, the B'nai Zion Temple, the Woman's Department 15 Club, the Grand Opera House, and Theatre On Line; and 16 WHEREAS, through collaboration with Walt Disney Studios and led by actor and 17 director Isobel Rosenbloom, SLT became the first organization to stage live theatrical 18 productions based on Walt Disney's renowned animated motion pictures; and Page 1 of 2 SCR NO. 53 SLS 22RS-2059 ORIGINAL 1 WHEREAS, SLT has staged more than three thousand five hundred performances 2 in its first century, undaunted by the Great Depression, World War II, a global pandemic, 3 and despite two devastating fires; and 4 WHEREAS, a 1986 fire substantially damaged the original Margaret Place location's 5 stagehouse and backstage areas, and following partial reconstruction of the structure, a 2008 6 fire destroyed the auditorium and lobby, forcing the theatre to perform in alternate venues 7 once again; and 8 WHEREAS, on March 3, 2011, SLT returned home to Margaret Place, opening its 9 new state-of-the-art facility which shares the original structure's charming Rural English 10 architectural style; the theatre continues to run at that location today; and 11 WHEREAS, operating as a nonprofit organization through the modern-day 12 Shreveport Little Theatre Guild, and with the collaborative efforts of volunteers, members, 13 crew, actors, and its board, the Shreveport Little Theatre continues to delight and challenge 14 the audiences that fill its intimate auditorium today. 15 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 16 commend the Shreveport Little Theatre on the occasion of its one hundredth consecutive 17 year of staging live theatrical productions. 18 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the 19 Shreveport Little Theatre.
