SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 53
BY SENATOR PEACOCK AND REPRESENTATI VE PRESSLY
A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
To commend the Shreveport Little Theatre on the occasion of its one hundredth consecutive
season of live theatrical production.
WHEREAS, the Shreveport Little Theatre was founded in 1922, staging its first
performance, The Maker of Dreams, at the Shreveport City Hall Auditorium; and
WHEREAS, founders Olivia Allen, Opal Woodley Parten, and Julia Elstner Rogers
introduced a new type of performance art known as "little theatre" to Shreveport, providing
new and experimental opportunities for writers, actors, and audiences alike; and
WHEREAS, having staged live productions every year without interruption since the
early twentieth century, the Shreveport Little Theatre, also known as "SLT", is one of the
oldest continuously operating theatres of its kind in the United States; and
WHEREAS, SLT originally opened its landmark theatre at 812 Margaret Place on
March 14, 1927, but multiple Shreveport locations have served as production venues
throughout its history, including City Hall, the B'nai Zion Temple, the Woman's Department
Club, the Grand Opera House, and Theatre On Line; and
WHEREAS, through collaboration with Walt Disney Studios and led by actor and
director Isobel Rosenbloom, SLT became the first organization to stage live theatrical
productions based on Walt Disney's renowned animated motion pictures; and
WHEREAS, SLT has staged more than three thousand five hundred performances
in its first century, undaunted by the Great Depression, World War II, a global pandemic,
and despite two devastating fires; and
WHEREAS, a 1986 fire substantially damaged the original Margaret Place location's
stagehouse and backstage areas, and following partial reconstruction of the structure, a 2008
fire destroyed the auditorium and lobby, forcing the theatre to perform in alternate venues
once again; and

architectural style; the theatre continues to run at that location today; and
WHEREAS, operating as a nonprofit organization through the modern-day
Shreveport Little Theatre Guild, and with the collaborative efforts of volunteers, members,
crew, actors, and its board, the Shreveport Little Theatre continues to delight and challenge
the audiences that fill its intimate auditorium today.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
commend the Shreveport Little Theatre on the occasion of its one hundredth consecutive
year of staging live theatrical productions.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
