SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 160

A RESOLUTION
To commend the National Coalition of 100 Black Women (NCBW), Incorporated,
Metropolitan Baton Rouge Chapter and to recognize, May 26, 2022, as NCBW of
Metropolitan Baton Rouge Day at the Louisiana State Capitol.
WHEREAS, the NCBW Metropolitan Baton Rouge Chapter is a local affiliate of a
nationally recognized nonprofit organization with sixty-one chapters across the United States
whose mission is to advocate on behalf of black women and girls and to realize a world
where socio-economic inequity does not exist; and
WHEREAS, the organization is purposed to foster principles of equal rights and
opportunities through promoting awareness of black culture, developing effective leaders,
and participating in civic affairs; the organization also seeks to actively address specific
issues of national and international importance while collaborating with individuals and
organizations to achieve mutual goals; and
WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Baton Rouge Chapter of the NCBW was chartered in
the Fall of 2014, and has worked to advocate on behalf of black women and girls through
national and local actions utilizing strategic alliances that promote leadership development
and gender equality in the areas of education, economic empowerment, and health; and
WHEREAS, with its diverse group of change agents united through a shared vision
to advocate for black women and girls without apology, the Metropolitan Baton Rouge
Chapter of the NCBW aims to set a standard of excellence, create a legacy of
forward-thinking leaders, and serve its community through leadership, commitment, and
service; and
WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Baton Rouge Chapter of the NCBW understands that

a healthy community is a better community, and to that end, the organization has
implemented initiatives such as the Childhood and Family Obesity Initiative, the NCBW
Cancer Health Disparities Program, the NCBW Metabolic Syndrome Initiative, and the
Prevention/Decrease Mortality Initiative to improve health outcomes, decrease mortality
among black women and girls, make health care more accessible in the Baton Rouge
metropolitan area as well as cultivate culturally competent research that benefits the whole
community; and
WHEREAS, the Chapter offers community outreach with events such as the "Let's
Chop It Up" program which focuses on healthy meal consumption and provides an
interactive exercise session called "Maintaining Me, Mind, Body and Soul," which offers
self-care strategies and fun exercises that can be performed anywhere to enhance clarity and
productivity; other community outreach programs offered include "Taking Control of the
Cluster" which provides health education to inform the community about metabolic
syndrome and diabetes and cardiovascular disease prevention; and
WHEREAS, the NCBW delivers support services that help youth achieve their
educational goals by fostering positive self-perception, encouraging excellence in education,
and promoting the pursuit of positive lifelong goals; NCBW is creating future leaders
through programs including "Beaucoup Vitabu: Black Girls Love to Read Too!" which is
purposed to increase literacy in girls entering kindergarten through eighth grade while
fostering positive mentor relationships with the women of the Metropolitan Baton Rouge
Chapter; support programs such as the "Mother's Day Miracle" which provide an educational
opportunity for girls and their mothers focused in the area of science, technology,
engineering, art, and mathematics; the organization also has a program that annually awards
scholarships to high school seniors, college, and graduate students; and
WHEREAS, the NCBW, the Metropolitan Baton Rouge Chapter, hosts economic
programs focusing on financial literacy, family wealth building, and entrepreneurship that
promote economic self-sufficiency; another economic program is the "SISTER-NOMIC$™"
which is an economic empowerment program that fosters a philosophical mindset in its
participants by advocating for pay equity, promoting women-owned businesses, and
providing legal aid and estate planning; and

WHEREAS, advocacy is one of the organization's greatest missions; the public
policy committee of the Metropolitan Baton Rouge Chapter focuses on civic engagement,
voter registration, and increasing women candidates for political office; the Chapter has
hosted a "Meet the Candidates" event for the East Baton Rouge Parish special election, and
the "Break the Bias" event which commemorated International Women's Day featuring
speakers from around the globe who discussed strategies to overcome bias in today's society.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
does hereby recognize the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Incorporated,
Metropolitan Baton Rouge Chapter and its commitment to improving the lives of black
women and girls and does recognize May 26, 2022, as National Coalition of 100 Black
Women, Incorporated, Metropolitan Baton Rouge Chapter Day at the Louisiana State
Capitol.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Incorporated, Metropolitan Baton Rouge Chapter.
