2022 Regular Session ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 30 BY SENATOR FIELDS A RESOLUTION To recognize April 6, 2022, as Southern University Day at the Louisiana State Capitol. WHEREAS, Southern University, chartered in April 1880, by the General Assembly of the state of Louisiana, recently celebrated 142 years of providing opportunities for students from all walks of life to achieve a high-quality, global educational experience; and WHEREAS, the Southern University Law Center, which opened for instruction in September 1947, is celebrating its 75th year in operation; and WHEREAS, the Southern University Laboratory School which began operating in September 1922 is celebrating its centennial anniversary as well as celebrating both the 2022 Louisiana High School Athletic Association Girls' and Boys' Basketball Division IV State Championships; and WHEREAS, the Southern University and A&M College System is the largest Historically Black College and University (HBCU) system in Louisiana and includes Southern University New Orleans, Southern University Baton Rouge, Southern University Law Center, Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center, and Southern University Shreveport; and WHEREAS, Southern University and A&M College has been designated as a Carnegie R2 institution with "high research activity", the second-highest classification for American research universities, and is ranked by the U.S. News and World Report magazine as one of the top 20 Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the nation; and WHEREAS, Southern University serves a unique and diverse population through the nurturing, creative, and holistic development of its students to prepare future leaders as entrepreneurs, visionaries, collaborators, and lifelong learners ready to meet the needs of and contribute to the success of the global workforce; and Page 1 of 2 SR NO. 30 ENROLLED WHEREAS, Southern University is a model of excellence in diversity, education, research, workforce solutions, and universal engagement and embraces its land-grant principles to affect change in and around the Southern University Community; and WHEREAS, Southern University has become a trailblazer in the HBCU community through its global network of thousands of successful alumni representing diverse professions, and making significant and positive contributions in both the public and private sector of our society and currently includes twenty-eight members in the Legislature of Louisiana; and WHEREAS, Southern University is a great asset to the state of Louisiana, the nation, and the world, and is a valuable economic engine in its communities, generating substantial economic returns year after year; and WHEREAS, the Southern University System is dedicated to meaningful public service and community engagement to enhance the academic experience and the common good through meaningful partnerships and projects to improve the quality of life for all while working to make a difference in the civic life of communities where we work and live; and WHEREAS, the Board of Supervisors of Southern University is vested with responsibility for the management and supervision of its institutions of higher education, statewide agricultural programs, and other programs which comprise the Southern University System; and WHEREAS, Southern University's mission is aligned with the Board of Regents Master Plan for higher education and Talent Imperative to Educate, Innovate, and Collaborate. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby welcome and officially recognize April 6, 2022, as Southern University Day at the Louisiana State Capitol.
