SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 53

A RESOLUTION
To commend Steve Duhon on being inducted into the 2022 class of the Louisiana Sports
Hall of Fame.
WHEREAS, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in Natchitoches, Louisiana, each year
collaborates with the Louisiana Sports Writers Association in selecting a limited number of
sports figures who embody the character, skill, and talent worthy of being named to the Hall
of Fame; and
WHEREAS, the 2022 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Induction Class includes Steve
Duhon; and
WHEREAS, a native of Opelousas and son of a horse trainer, Steve Duhon was one
of seven children raised on his parents' 44-acre farm; and
WHEREAS, Steve began his lifelong love of horses and rodeo at a very early age
when he began steer wrestling, also known as bulldogging, when he was in the seventh
grade; and
WHEREAS, Steve was a standout linebacker in the Louisiana Independent School
Association at Belmont Academy, earning 1979 and 1980 state defensive most valuable
player and 1980 honorable mention All-America recognition; and
WHEREAS, Steve also was a 1980 and 1981 state champion steer wrestler and the
1981 national high school reserve champion cowboy; and
WHEREAS, Steve played in every LSU football game as a true freshman linebacker
in 1981; he ran for 3,305 yards as a fullback and made 148 tackles as a linebacker; and
WHEREAS, Steve chose to pursue rodeo and spent one year at Northwestern State
on the rodeo team; and
WHEREAS, Steve made the decision to pursue rodeo as a profession, and in 1985,
he claimed the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association (PRCA) Resistol Rookie of the
Year award; and

WHEREAS, Steve won three rodeo world championships as a steer wrestler (1986,
1987, and 1993) and qualified for the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) eight times; and
WHEREAS, Steve twice won the steer wrestling NFR aggregate title and established
a Wrangler NFR record run of 3.0 seconds in 1986; that mark was tied 15 years later in 2001
and has yet to be surpassed; and
WHEREAS, he is a member of the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame (inducted in 2003) and
the National Cowboy Hall of Fame (Class of 2018).
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
does hereby commend Steve Duhon on being inducted into the 2022 class of the Louisiana
Sports Hall of Fame.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
Steve Duhon.
