HLS 23RS-3233 ORIGINAL 2023 Regular Session HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 118 BY REPRESENTATIVES SCHEXNAYDER, ECHOLS, FISHER, GADBERRY, TRAVIS JOHNSON, MCFARLAND, MOORE, RISER, AND THOMPSON AND SENATORS CATHEY, JACKSON, MORRIS, AND WOMACK CONDOLENCES: Expresses the condolences of the legislature on the death of Judge Jimmy N. Dimos 1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION 2To express the condolences of the Legislature of Louisiana upon the death of Judge Jimmy 3 N. Dimos. 4 WHEREAS, it is with immense sadness and profound regret that the members of the 5Legislature of Louisiana have learned of the death, on May 18, 2023, of former speaker of 6the Louisiana House of Representatives and retired 4th Judicial District Court judge, Jimmy 7N. Dimos; and 8 WHEREAS, Jimmy N. Dimos was born on October 18, 1938, and immigrated from 9the Socialist Republic of Macedonia to Monroe, Louisiana, in 1951; he graduated from 10Neville High School in Monroe in 1956 and received a bachelor's degree from the University 11of Louisiana at Monroe in 1960 and a juris doctorate from Tulane University Law School 12in 1963; and 13 WHEREAS, Judge Dimos received admission into the State Bar of Louisiana in 1964 14and joined the McKeithen, Mouser, and McKinley law firm; and 15 WHEREAS, Judge Dimos was elected to serve District No. 16 in the Louisiana 16House of Representatives in 1975; he quickly gained a reputation as a reformer in the 17legislature, which led to his selection as speaker of the House in 1988 during the Buddy 18Roemer administration; he was a staunch advocate for trial lawyers in tort reform debates 19and unwaveringly pro-life throughout his twenty-three-year legislative career; he was also 20a dedicated supporter of Tulane University; and Page 1 of 3 HLS 23RS-3233 ORIGINAL HCR NO. 118 1 WHEREAS, Judge Dimos resigned from the legislature upon his election to the 4th 2Judicial District following a special election held on March 27, 1999; he served in this 3position until December 31, 2006; in 2017, he was inducted into the Louisiana Political Hall 4of Fame and the Louisiana Judicial Hall of Fame; and 5 WHEREAS, Judge Dimos was affiliated with a number of professional 6organizations, including the Fourth Judicial District Bar Association, Louisiana State Bar 7Association, Louisiana State Law Institute Council, Louisiana District Judges Association, 8and the Employers Support of the Guard & Reserve (ESGR); and 9 WHEREAS, Judge Dimos was also very active with numerous civic organizations 10and held various roles including serving as president of the Monroe Jaycees and vice 11president of the Optimist Club of Greater Monroe; he was also involved with the Home 12Builders Association, Monroe Chamber of Commerce, West Monroe Chamber of 13Commerce, and Monroe Rotary Club; and 14 WHEREAS, Judge Dimos received numerous awards and honors including the 15Jaycee's Outstanding Young Man of the Twin Cities in 1971, the Junior Chamber 16International Senate Golden Arrow Award in 1984, and the Daughters of the American 17Revolution Americanism Medal in 1985; his name was chosen to be on the Honor Wall at 18Ellis Island in 1989; and 19 WHEREAS, Judge Jimmy N. Dimos was a civic-minded individual with numerous 20professional and political accomplishments; he leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 21fifty-eight years, Dale Guilkey Dimos; son, John Nicholas Dimos; daughters, Laura Flynn, 22and her husband Steve, Myra Zeringue, and her husband Guy III, and Christy Jones, and her 23husband Jimmy; grandchildren, George Flynn, Elena Flynn, Eliza Zeringue, Mary Laura 24Zeringue, Paul Zeringue, Adele Zeringue, Casey Jones, and Nicholas Jones; cousin, Tommy 25Crazovich, and his wife Lynn; and sister-in-law, Cindy Ridgway; he will be deeply missed, 26but his legacy of service to the state of Louisiana will be remembered forever. 27 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 28express heartfelt condolences on the death of former speaker of the Louisiana House of 29Representatives and retired 4th Judicial District Court judge, Jimmy N. Dimos; does hereby 30recognize Judge Dimos's inspiring story of success and civil service as an immigrant Page 2 of 3 HLS 23RS-3233 ORIGINAL HCR NO. 118 1realizing the American dream in Louisiana; and does hereby extend sincerest wishes that his 2family, friends, former colleagues, and loved ones find comfort in their shared memories of 3his inspiring life.
