ENROLLED 2023 Regular Session HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 118 BY REPRESENTATIVES SCHEXNAYDER, ECHOLS, FISHER, GADBERRY, TRAVIS JOHNSON, MCFARLAND, MOORE, RISER, AND THOMPSON AND SENATORS CATHEY, FOIL, JACKSON, MORRIS, PEACOCK, AND WOMACK A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION To express the condolences of the Legislature of Louisiana upon the death of Judge Jimmy N. Dimos. WHEREAS, it is with immense sadness and profound regret that the members of the Legislature of Louisiana have learned of the death, on May 18, 2023, of former speaker of the Louisiana House of Representatives and retired 4th Judicial District Court judge, Jimmy N. Dimos; and WHEREAS, Jimmy N. Dimos was born on October 18, 1938, and immigrated from the Socialist Republic of Macedonia to Monroe, Louisiana, in 1951; he graduated from Neville High School in Monroe in 1956 and received a bachelor's degree from the University of Louisiana at Monroe in 1960 and a juris doctorate from Tulane University Law School in 1963; and WHEREAS, Judge Dimos received admission into the State Bar of Louisiana in 1964 and joined the McKeithen, Mouser, and McKinley law firm; and WHEREAS, Judge Dimos was elected to serve District No. 16 in the Louisiana House of Representatives in 1975; he quickly gained a reputation as a reformer in the legislature, which led to his selection as speaker of the House in 1988 during the Buddy Roemer administration; he was a staunch advocate for trial lawyers in tort reform debates Page 1 of 3 HCR NO. 118 ENROLLED and unwaveringly pro-life throughout his twenty-three-year legislative career; he was also a dedicated supporter of Tulane University; and WHEREAS, Judge Dimos resigned from the legislature upon his election to the 4th Judicial District following a special election held on March 27, 1999; he served in this position until December 31, 2006; in 2017, he was inducted into the Louisiana Political Hall of Fame and the Louisiana Judicial Hall of Fame; and WHEREAS, Judge Dimos was affiliated with a number of professional organizations, including the Fourth Judicial District Bar Association, Louisiana State Bar Association, Louisiana State Law Institute Council, Louisiana District Judges Association, and the Employers Support of the Guard & Reserve (ESGR); and WHEREAS, Judge Dimos was also very active with numerous civic organizations and held various roles including serving as president of the Monroe Jaycees and vice president of the Optimist Club of Greater Monroe; he was also involved with the Home Builders Association, Monroe Chamber of Commerce, West Monroe Chamber of Commerce, and Monroe Rotary Club; and WHEREAS, Judge Dimos received numerous awards and honors including the Jaycee's Outstanding Young Man of the Twin Cities in 1971, the Junior Chamber International Senate Golden Arrow Award in 1984, and the Daughters of the American Revolution Americanism Medal in 1985; his name was chosen to be on the Honor Wall at Ellis Island in 1989; and WHEREAS, Judge Jimmy N. Dimos was a civic-minded individual with numerous professional and political accomplishments; he leaves to cherish his memory his wife of fifty-eight years, Dale Guilkey Dimos; son, John Nicholas Dimos; daughters, Laura Flynn, and her husband Steve, Myra Zeringue, and her husband Guy III, and Christy Jones, and her husband Jimmy; grandchildren, George Flynn, Elena Flynn, Eliza Zeringue, Mary Laura Zeringue, Paul Zeringue, Adele Zeringue, Casey Jones, and Nicholas Jones; cousin, Tommy Crazovich, and his wife Lynn; and sister-in-law, Cindy Ridgway; he will be deeply missed, but his legacy of service to the state of Louisiana will be remembered forever. Page 2 of 3 HCR NO. 118 ENROLLED THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby express heartfelt condolences on the death of former speaker of the Louisiana House of Representatives and retired 4th Judicial District Court judge, Jimmy N. Dimos; does hereby recognize Judge Dimos's inspiring story of success and civil service as an immigrant realizing the American dream in Louisiana; and does hereby extend sincerest wishes that his family, friends, former colleagues, and loved ones find comfort in their shared memories of his inspiring life.
