A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
To urge and request the Department of Veterans Affairs, in conjunction with the office of
state buildings and in consultation with the Department of Culture, Recreation and
Tourism's state historic preservation officer, to plan and implement, subject to the
approval of the governor, the president of the Senate, and the speaker of the House
of Representatives, a Purple Heart Trail in the Louisiana Veterans Memorial Park,
located on the grounds surrounding the state capitol.
WHEREAS, the valor and sacrifice of soldiers have been an integral part of our
nation's history since before we were a nation; General George Washington saw the need to
recognize and encourage military merit in the Continental Army during the American
Revolution; he selected a purple heart as the signifier of such merit; and
WHEREAS, through the decades and centuries, the use and significance of the
Purple Heart award have evolved, but the merit it represents has never been in short supply
in the hearts of America's military personnel; and
WHEREAS, in our own time among those outside of military service, the Purple
Heart is probably the best known and most respected of all military honors; Americans are
ever grateful for the battlefield sacrifices made by recipients of the Purple Heart; and
WHEREAS, commemoration and remembrance of Purple Heart recipients is always
appropriate, and the addition of a Purple Heart Trail to the Louisiana Veterans Memorial
Park at the state capitol is a fitting way to commemorate and remember.
