HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 126
BY REPRESENTATIVE CORMIER
A RESOLUTION
To recognize Tuesday, May 16, 2023, as Plaquemines Parish Day at the state capitol.
WHEREAS, Plaquemines Parish is home to more than twenty-three thousand
residents, and is the site of many historic events; and
WHEREAS, Plaquemines Parish serves an important role in the oil and trade
industries; and
WHEREAS, Plaquemines Parish is the parish with the most combined land and water
area in Louisiana, and is located along the last seventy miles of the Mississippi River; and
WHEREAS, the parish became known as Plaquemines after the French name for
their military post, "piakimin", which means persimmon, a name given because of the
numerous persimmon trees near the post; and
WHEREAS, Plaquemines Parish was the first place in the United States where
shippers used a container for cargo in foreign trade; and
WHEREAS, Fort Jackson is a major historical site in the parish, dating back to 1822,
and was built pursuant to a recommendation from General Andrew Jackson; the fort was
later used during the Civil War and as a training base for troops during World War I; and
WHEREAS, Woodland Plantation, an antebellum mansion in Plaquemines Parish,
serves as a bed and breakfast and is depicted on the label for Southern Comfort whiskey; and
WHEREAS, Plaquemines Parish has significant seafood and citrus industries and is
the largest crude oil producing parish in Louisiana; and
WHEREAS, Plaquemines Parish is also home to Plaquemines Port, one of the largest
ports in the United States; and
WHEREAS, Isabela Rivera reigns as the current Orange Queen with great distinction
and dedication, along with her Orange King Jody Guilbeau, while Kadence Tassin reigns as
the current Teen Orange Queen, and Bentlei Versowsky holds the title of Orange Blossom;
and

WHEREAS, pageant winners for the 2023 seafood court include Seafood Queen
Catherine Blondiau, Teen Seafood Queen Amy Hochhalter, and Pearl Carley Morse.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby designate Tuesday, May 16, 2023, as Plaquemines
Parish Day at the state capitol.
