HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 144
BY REPRESENTATIVES CREWS, EDMONSTON, MIKE JOHNSON, ORGERON,
CHARLES OWEN, PRESSLY, AND SEABAUGH
STATE SYMBOL:  Requests the citizens of Louisiana to practice proper state flag etiquette
1	A RESOLUTION
2To urge and request the citizens of Louisiana to practice proper Louisiana state flag etiquette
3 and to fold the Louisiana state flag with reverence and respect.
4 WHEREAS, the American flag represents our nation and state flags serve as symbols
5of each state; and
6 WHEREAS, the Louisiana state flag symbolizes truth and sacrifice for the citizens
7of Louisiana; and
8 WHEREAS, the Louisiana state flag is a source of pride and reverence for citizens
9of Louisiana; and 
10 WHEREAS, the Louisiana state flag is a treasured representation of the tradition of
11Louisiana, and like the American flag it should be treated with the utmost regard; and 
12 WHEREAS, since the Louisiana state flag commemorates Louisiana's journey and
13is a unique symbol of its history, proper steps are to be followed when folding the flag, and
14such steps shall be recognized as the official procedures for folding of the Louisiana state
15flag.
16 THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the following steps shall be taken in order for
17a properly folded flag to display the eye and face of the pelican on the front and the three
18drops of blood and the beaks of the young pelicans on the back:
19 (1)  Lay the flag on a clean flat surface.

1 (2)  With the flag face up fold the flag from the left and from the right resulting in
2the flag being one-third its original size.
3 (3)  With the flag folded at one-third its original size, repeat the previous steps with
4the result of the flag being one-sixth its original size with the center section visible only.
5 (4)  With the flag folded at one-sixth its original size, fold the flag in triangles from
6the bottom, to the right, then up, and to the left.
7 (5)  Fold the flag in triangles from the top, to the right, then down, and to the left.
8 (6)  Tuck the bottom triangle into the top triangle as done with the American flag.
9 THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the tripartite fold of the
10Louisiana state flag shall be in recognition of our state's French heritage as the first fold
11represents the three colors of the French flag; the second fold represents the legislative,
12executive, and judicial branches of government; and the third fold represents Louisiana's ties
13to the United States. 
14 THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of
15the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby urge and request the citizens of Louisiana to
16practice proper Louisiana state flag etiquette and fold the Louisiana state flag with reverence
17and respect.
