HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 164

A RESOLUTION
To commend the Isidore Newman School speech and debate team on being named the
Louisiana High School Speech League 2023 state champions.
WHEREAS, the Isidore Newman School speech and debate team captured the 2023
state title at the Louisiana High School Speech League (LHSSL) State Tournament of
Champions held in Lafayette, Louisiana; and
WHEREAS, the Isidore Newman School state champion speech and debate team is
comprised of thirty-seven members, and each member made significant contributions to the
team's winning effort; and
WHEREAS, Isidore Newman had fifteen finalists and sixteen semifinalists in the
speech events of the tournament; Jackson Dirks placed first in Novice Extemporaneous
Speaking, and Elizabeth Elliot placed first in Varsity Impromptu Speaking; and
WHEREAS, the team had four-way co-champions in Policy Debate and three-way
co-champions in Advanced Lincoln Douglas Debate; the Policy Debate co-champion teams
consisted of Grace Carmody and Aria Jolly, Elizabeth Elliot and Hudson Nguyen, Caroline
Carmody and Bryce Martin, and Nick Rezza and Jackson Dirks; the Advanced Lincoln
Douglas Debate co-champions were Andrew Brandt, Sam Rice, and Owen Dodd; and
WHEREAS, the team also had twenty-four students who made it to the Debate
elimination rounds and eleven students in the final round of Congressional Debate; and
WHEREAS, the members of the Isidore Newman School speech and debate team are
most deserving of the highest recognition for their incredible display of academic ability at
the LHSSL State Tournament of Champions.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the Isidore Newman School speech and
debate team on being named the Louisiana High School Speech League 2023 state
champions and does hereby extend sincerest wishes that its members continue their
incredible work and always strive for greatness.
