ENROLLED 2023 Regular Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 21 BY REPRESENTATIVE MINCEY A RESOLUTION To commend the city of Walker upon its designation as a Purple Heart City. WHEREAS, American military veterans have made many astounding sacrifices in order to protect our country, including leaving their homes, families, and communities and putting themselves in life-threatening danger in unfamiliar territory; and WHEREAS, the contributions and sacrifices of the men and women who serve in the various branches of the United States armed forces have played a vital role in securing and maintaining the freedoms and lifestyle enjoyed by American citizens; many of these men and women in uniform also gave their lives protecting and serving us; and WHEREAS, veterans who are recipients of the Purple Heart medal are given this honor for being wounded or killed during combat with an enemy force while performing singularly meritorious acts of service; the Purple Heart is the oldest American military decoration in use today, and it evolved from the Badge of Military Merit created by General George Washington; and WHEREAS, the mission of the Military Order of the Purple Heart is to foster an environment of goodwill among the combat-wounded veteran members and their families, promote patriotism, support legislative initiatives, and make certain that we never forget their sacrifices; and WHEREAS, the residents of the city of Walker, Louisiana, proudly support its large, highly-decorated military veteran population, which includes a number of Purple Heart recipients; and WHEREAS, to this end, on September 12, 2022, Mayor Jimmy Watson proclaimed Walker a Purple Heart City to honor the service and sacrifice of the nation's men and women in uniform who have been wounded or killed in action; and Page 1 of 2 HR NO. 21 ENROLLED WHEREAS, it is most fitting to recognize the city of Walker upon its designation as a Purple Heart City. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the city of Walker upon its designation as a Purple Heart City; does hereby recognize those citizens of Walker who have received the Purple Heart medal; does hereby further recognize the tremendous valor and fortitude displayed by the soldiers who have been wounded or killed in combat; and does hereby express sincere appreciation for the sacrifices our armed forces have made in the name of freedom.
