HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 214
BY REPRESENTATIVES FIRMENT AND MIKE JOHNSON
A RESOLUTION
To recognize June 18-25, 2023, as Amateur Radio Week in the state of Louisiana.
WHEREAS, amateur radio operators are celebrating over a century of the miracle
of the human voice broadcast over the airwaves; and
WHEREAS, amateur radio has continued to provide a bridge between peoples,
societies, and countries by creating friendships and allowing the sharing of ideas; and
WHEREAS, over the decades, amateur radio operators have also provided countless
hours of community service both in emergencies and by assisting local organizations; and
WHEREAS, amateur radio operators provide such services as volunteers; and
WHEREAS, the House of Representatives of the Legislature of Louisiana also
recognizes the services amateur radio operators provide to our many emergency response
organizations, including the Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency
Preparedness and many parish and local law enforcement agencies; and
WHEREAS, these individuals have further demonstrated their value in public
assistance by providing free radio communications for local parades, bike-a-thons,
walk-a-thons, fairs, and other charitable public events; and
WHEREAS, the House of Representatives of the Legislature of Louisiana appreciates
the diligence of these amateur radio operators who also serve as weather spotters in the
Skywarn program of the National Weather Service; and
WHEREAS, the American Radio Relay League is the national association for
amateur radio operators in the United States; and
WHEREAS, there are more than 850,000 amateur radio licensees in the United
States, and an estimated three million worldwide; and

WHEREAS, the American Radio Relay League Amateur Radio Field Day exercise
will take place on June 24-25, 2023; the exercise is a twenty-four hour emergency
preparedness drill and demonstration of the operators' skills and readiness to provide
self-supporting communications without further infrastructure being required.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize June 18-25, 2023, as Amateur Radio Week
in the state of Louisiana.
