HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 278

A RESOLUTION
To express the condolences of the House of Representatives upon the death of Corporal
Shawn Kelly of the Denham Springs Police Department.
WHEREAS, it is with immense sadness and profound regret that the House of
Representatives has learned of the tragic passing, on June 2, 2023, of Denham Springs Police
Corporal Shawn Kelly; and
WHEREAS, Cpl. Kelly is remembered as a dedicated public servant and a truly
wonderful father, grandfather, husband, and human being; he began his law enforcement
career in 1994 with the Louisiana Department of Corrections and joined the Denham Springs
Police Department (DSPD) in 2019 as a taser instructor, field training officer, and
motorman; and
WHEREAS, Cpl. Kelly was shot multiple times in the line of duty on May 11, 2023,
and remained hospitalized in critical condition until his passing; he was surrounded by his
family, friends, and members of the DSPD at the time of his death; and
WHEREAS, Corporal Shawn Kelly was a true Louisiana hero who selflessly gave
his life protecting his community; he will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on
forever in the hearts and minds of the many people whose lives he touched.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby express heartfelt condolences on the death of Corporal
Shawn Kelly of the Denham Springs Police Department and does hereby extend sincerest
wishes that his family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones find comfort in their shared
memories of his beautiful life.
