HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 80

A RESOLUTION
To commend the AmeriCorps Seniors Southern University at Shreveport Foster Grandparent
Volunteer Program for forty-three years of service and to recognize Thursday,
May 4, 2023, as AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparent Volunteer Day at the state
capitol.
WHEREAS, it is most fitting to recognize AmeriCorps Seniors Southern University
at Shreveport Foster Grandparent Volunteer Program for forty-three years of exceptional
service in Caddo, Bossier, and DeSoto parishes; and
WHEREAS, the Foster Grandparent Volunteer Program is a federally funded
program, sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service, now known
as AmeriCorps, which brings people together to tackle the country's most pressing issues
through service work and volunteering; AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers
assist organizations that are committed to the improvement of communities across the
country; and
WHEREAS, the Foster Grandparent Volunteer Program is now sponsored by
Southern University at Shreveport; this program offers seniors, who are fifty-five years of
age or older, opportunities to serve as mentors, tutors, and caregivers to economically
disadvantaged youth in a one-on-one setting; the program is designed to help improve
behavioral and educational outcomes for students with special and exceptional needs, such
as those who are victims of abuse or neglect; it also provides support to children and families
of veterans; the program serves over 280,000 special needs children through a network of
organizations and helps guide disadvantaged students to a higher level of academic
achievement; and

WHEREAS, the AmeriCorps Seniors Southern University at Shreveport Foster
Grandparent Volunteer Program matches volunteers' willingness and capacity to dedicate
time and experience with the needs of children so that they can be prepared for the lives
ahead of them; and
WHEREAS, the AmeriCorps Seniors Southern University at Shreveport Foster
Grandparent Volunteer Program continues to fulfill its mission of providing guidance and
support to disadvantaged children; the program's volunteers provide the necessary comfort
and love that help guide a child on a healthy path towards a successful future; these
volunteers are worthy of the highest recognition.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the AmeriCorps Seniors Southern University
at Shreveport Foster Grandparent Volunteer Program for forty-three years of service; does
hereby extend sincere wishes for the continued success of the program; and does hereby
recognize Thursday, May 4, 2023, as AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparent Volunteer
Day at the state capitol.
