2023 Regular Session ENROLLED SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 14 BY SENATOR PEACOCK A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION To commend South Highlands Elementary School on its centennial celebration. WHEREAS, the A.C. Steere Land Developing Company gifted a tract of land outside of the Shreveport city limits for the construction of South Highlands Elementary School in 1922; and WHEREAS, construction of South Highlands Elementary spurred growth in the region, and the school now anchors an historic neighborhood, welcoming students from all corners of the City of Shreveport; and WHEREAS, South Highlands began as a community school and was recognized as a magnet school in 1981; and WHEREAS, South Highlands is now a performing arts and academic magnet school that serves a diverse, multicultural student body of nearly five hundred students in kindergarten through fifth grade; and WHEREAS, South Highlands has been consistently recognized for excellence in student and faculty achievement and holds the distinction of being the first Louisiana public elementary school to be honored three times as a U.S. Department of Education National Blue Ribbon School; and WHEREAS, South Highlands is the first and only school in the nation to be designated as the George Rodrigue Arts Integration Lab School and one of just fourteen schools in the state selected as a George Rodrigue Foundation/Louisiana A+ Schools arts integration school, promoting student understanding through forms of art; and WHEREAS, the faculty and staff of South Highlands Elementary School seek to build students into confident critical thinkers through a rigorous, dynamic, and innovative curriculum focused not only on academics, but also exploration through creative and interactive experiences in art, music, drama, foreign languages, and STEM fields; and Page 1 of 2 SCR NO. 14 ENROLLED WHEREAS, the students and faculty of South Highlands have amassed a substantial collection of local and national awards in academics, art, literature, and music; and WHEREAS, South Highlands faculty routinely shares its expertise and success with other institutions, leading professional development through presentations and conferences at both local and national levels; and WHEREAS, the occasion of this centennial celebration afforded alumni and former faculty and staff an opportunity to step back into the history and heritage of South Highlands Elementary with campus tours, food, ceremonies, and other events. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend and congratulate South Highlands Elementary School on its exemplary legacy of excellence in serving a diverse student body for over one hundred years, and does hereby extend sincere hopes for many more years of continued success in building future leaders.
