2023 Regular Session ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 119 BY SENATORS BERNARD, ALLAIN, BARROW, BOUDREAUX, BOUIE, CATHEY, CLOUD, DUPLESSIS, FESI, FIELDS, FOIL, HENRY, HENSGENS, HEWITT, LAMBERT, LUNEAU, MILLIGAN, FRED MILLS, ROBERT MILLS, MORRIS, PEACOCK, POPE, PRICE, REESE, SMITH, STINE, TALBOT, WHITE AND WOMACK A RESOLUTION To designate the week of May 21 through May 28, 2023, as Police Week and to commend the service of law enforcement officers. WHEREAS, members of law enforcement agencies provide a vital public service and have essential roles in safeguarding the rights and freedoms of the citizens of Louisiana; and WHEREAS, approximately nine hundred thousand law enforcement officers serve their communities across the United States; and WHEREAS, police and peace officers protect citizens twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week; and WHEREAS, nearly six thousand assaults against law enforcement officers are reported annually, resulting in approximately sixteen thousand injuries; and WHEREAS, since the first recorded death in 1791, more than twenty thousand law enforcement officers in the United States have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty; and WHEREAS, the names of fallen public servants are engraved on the walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.; and WHEREAS, in the United States, two hundred twenty-four officers died in the line of duty in 2022; and WHEREAS, those new names of fallen heroes will be added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial this year; and WHEREAS, the service and sacrifice of all officers killed in the line of duty were honored during the thirty-fourth annual National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund candlelight vigil held on May 13, 2023; and WHEREAS, May 15, 2023, was designated as Peace Officers Memorial Day in honor of all fallen officers and their families, and the United States flag was flown at half-staff in many locations throughout our great nation; and Page 1 of 2 SR NO. 119 ENROLLED WHEREAS, law enforcement officers are guardians of life and property, defenders of individual rights, and warriors against crime, and they merit sincere commendations for their steadfast commitment to securing and preserving the welfare and safety of their fellow citizens. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby designate May 21 through May 28, 2023, as Police Week in Louisiana; does hereby commend the state's law enforcement officers for their noble and exemplary accomplishments; and does hereby express enduring appreciation for the tremendous honor and pride they bring to Louisiana citizens. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the president of the Louisiana Fraternal Order of Police. PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE Page 2 of 2
