SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 50
BY SENATOR WOMACK 
A RESOLUTION
To designate and recognize Tuesday, May 2, 2023, as Main Street Day at the state capitol.
WHEREAS, since 1984, Louisiana Main Street has helped communities revitalize
their historic downtown areas in celebration of each community's character and which
generates impressive economic returns; and
WHEREAS, the thirty-six designated communities comprising Louisiana Main Street
are coming back strong from the pandemic, logging 547 new jobs, 133 new businesses,
47,158 volunteer hours, and $25,925,190 in public/private investment in FY 2021-2022; and
WHEREAS, every dollar invested in the state program returns $2.90 to $7.40 in state
sales tax annually, with $190,000 per year of state income tax being generated from jobs
created by Main Street employers; and
WHEREAS, Louisiana Main Street leads a statewide network of designated
communities and districts including: Abbeville, Bastrop, Columbia, Crowley, Denham
Springs, DeRidder, Donaldsonville, Eunice, Franklin, Hammond, Homer, Houma, Kenner,
Leesville, Minden, Monroe, Morgan City, Natchitoches, New Iberia, New Roads, Opelousas,
Plaquemine, Ponchatoula, Ruston, Slidell, Springhill, St. Francisville, St. Martinville,
Thibodaux, West Monroe, and Winnsboro, and the following districts in New Orleans:
Broad Street, Lower Ninth Ward, North Rampart Street, OC Haley Boulevard, and Old
Algiers; and
WHEREAS, Louisiana Main Street assists communities on the pathway to potential
designation as a Main Street community of which Winnfield is a current "Lagniappe"
community; and
WHEREAS, Main Street's communities are part of a national network of over twelve
hundred Main Street communities, led by Main Street America, and the program has become
a proven model for economic development - "when downtown grows, the whole community
grows"; and

WHEREAS, leaders from Main Street communities across Louisiana have traveled
to the state capitol to meet and interact with their elected officials.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
hereby designates and recognizes Tuesday, May 2, 2023, as Main Street Day at the state
capitol and the thirty-six designated Louisiana communities which comprise Louisiana Main
Street are further commended for their outstanding efforts to revitalize downtown areas
throughout the state.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
assistant secretary of the Office of Cultural Development in the Department of Culture,
Recreation, and Tourism and the lieutenant governor of Louisiana.
