[R.S. 1:13(B) and 24:177(E)] HB 231 Engrossed 2024 Regular Session Mandie Landry Abstract: Clarifies that abuse perpetrated by a school employee shall be reported to a local or state law enforcement agency. Present law (Ch.C. Art. 610(A)(1)) provides the procedures for reporting abuse or neglect of a child. Proposed law retains present law and clarifies that abuse perpetrated by a school employee must be reported to a local or state law enforcement agency. Effective upon signature of governor or lapse of time for gubernatorial action. (Amends Ch.C. Art. 610(A)(1)) Summary of Amendments Adopted by House The Committee Amendments Proposed by House Committee on Health and Welfare to the original bill: 1. Remove teaching and school staff and coaches from the definition of "caretaker". 2. Remove provision clarifying that mandatory reports shall not be exempt from reporting child abuse because the person perpetrating the abuse is a school employee. 2. Add that child abuse perpetrated by a school employee, teacher, or coach shall be reported to a local or state law enforcement agency.
