HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 101
BY REPRESENTATIVES BOYER AND CHASSION
A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
To urge and request the Department of Transportation and Development to seek a waiver for
a gateway sign permit for a "Crawfish Expressway" sign in Breaux Bridge.
WHEREAS, the Louisiana Legislature declared Breaux Bridge the "Crawfish Capital
of the World" in 1959; and
WHEREAS, Breaux Bridge is the home of the annual Crawfish Festival; and
WHEREAS, the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival has become one of the largest
gatherings of world-famous Cajun, zydeco, and swamp pop musicians; and
WHEREAS, the Crawfish Festival is a popular attraction for families from near and
far featuring Cajun cuisine, and of course, crawfish served in every possible way; and
WHEREAS, the Crawfish Festival also features crawfish races, Cajun and zydeco
dance contests, a carnival midway, a crawfish cook-off, and a parade in honor of the
Crawfish Queen; and
WHEREAS, a "Crawfish Expressway" sign would bring added notoriety and
emphasis on the Crawfish Capital of the World; and
WHEREAS, interstate gateway sign permits are typically issued for cities with a
population of ten thousand or more; and
WHEREAS, the 2020 federal decennial census shows the population of Breaux
Bridge as seven thousand five hundred and thirteen; and
WHEREAS, while the population in Breaux Bridge does not meet the standard
threshold for gateway sign permits the cultural significance of the local cuisine, particularly
crawfish prepared to perfection, warrants an exception.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
urge an request the Department of Transportation and Development to seek a waiver from
the Federal Highway Administration for Breaux Bridge to obtain a "Crawfish Expressway"
sign.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
secretary of the Department of Transportation and Development.
