VETERANS:  Provides relative to care for nonveterans
1	AN ACT
2To amend and reenact R.S. 29:383, relative to the Department of Veterans Affairs; to
3 provide for maintenance and care of nonveterans; to provide for rules and
4 regulations; and to provide for related matters.
5Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
6 Section 1.  R.S. 29:383 is hereby amended and reenacted to read as follows: 
7 ยง383.  Charges for care and maintenance
8	At the discretion of the department of veterans affairs, reasonable rates may
9 be charged for maintenance and care to those veterans and nonveteran residents who
10 are capable of paying for any or all of the use of the facilities.  In determining
11 whether or not a veteran is capable of paying for the use of the facilities, the
12 department of veterans affairs shall establish by the adoption and promulgation of
13 rules and regulations a charge system of taking into consideration the income and
14 estate of the veteran resident receiving care.

Present law provides that the Dept. of Veterans Affairs may charge reasonable rates for
maintenance and care to veterans who reside in its facilities.  
Present law furthers allows for the promulgation of rules and regulations to create a charge
system for such charges.
Proposed law retains present law and provides that charges for maintenance and care may
be charged for nonveteran residents of veterans affairs facilities.
