R.S. 18:1309(A)(2) is hereby amended and reenacted to read as follows: 8 ยง1309. Early voting; verification 9 A. 10 * * * 11 (2)(a) During the early voting period, the registrar shall maintain regular 12 office hours, remaining open from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday. 13 Early voting on each day of the early voting period shall terminate when all persons 14 who were in line to vote at the close of the regular office hours of the registrar's 15 office, as provided in this Paragraph, have been allowed to vote. If the secretary of 16 state determines that the office space of the registrar is insufficient or inconvenient 17 to accommodate early voting, the registrar may provide for an alternate location to 18 conduct early voting, which location shall be in an accessible and conveniently 19 located public facility within the parish, and in such case, adequate notice shall be Page 1 of 3 CODING: Words in struck through type are deletions from existing law; words underscored are additions. HLS 25RS-917 ORIGINAL HB NO. 424 1 posted at the registrar's office informing the public of the location where early voting 2 is being conducted. 3 (b) Notwithstanding R.S. 18:1363 or any other law to the contrary, each 4 parish may provide for additional early voting locations at a scale of at least one 5 additional site per every fifty thousand voters or five hundred square miles of 6 landmass. 7 (c) Adequate notice of early voting locations shall be posted at the registrar's 8 office and on the website of the registrar and clerk of court informing the public of 9 the locations where early voting is being conducted. 10 (d) For each additional early voting location implemented pursuant to 11 Subparagraph (b) of this Paragraph, the secretary of state shall reimburse the 12 registrar for expenses related to location rentals, technology fees, and temporary 13 staffing needs if the legislature appropriates adequate funds to the secretary of state 14 for that purpose. 15 * * * DIGEST The digest printed below was prepared by House Legislative Services. Present law provides for regular office hours that shall be maintained by the registrar's office during the early voting period. Provides for when early voting ends each day during the early voting period. Further provides that the registrar may provide for alternate early voting locations if the secretary of state determines that the office space of the registrar is insufficient or inconvenient to accommodate early voting. Proposed law retains present law. Present law provides that adequate notice be posted at the registrar's office informing the public of the location where early voting is being conducted. Further provides that for each additional early voting location implemented pursuant to proposed law, the secretary of state shall reimburse the registrar for expenses related to the additional early voting locations so long as the legislature appropriates funds to the secretary of state for this purpose.
