HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 10

COMMENDATIONS:  Commends the victims of Hurricane Katrina on the twentieth
anniversary of its landfall and designates August 29th as "Katrina Day"
1	A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
2To commend and honor the victims of Hurricane Katrina on the twentieth anniversary of its
3 landfall and to designate August 29th as "Katrina Day" in remembrance of those
4 affected by the storm.
5 WHEREAS, Hurricane Katrina struck Louisiana just after 6:00 a.m. on August 29,
62005; and
7 WHEREAS, the federally built levee system in New Orleans collapsed soon after,
8allowing the storm surge to inundate the region from the Gulf of Mexico and Lake
9Pontchartrain; and
10 WHEREAS, eighty percent of New Orleans was submerged underwater, forever
11reshaping the city and its communities; and
12 WHEREAS, Hurricane Katrina resulted in the deaths of one thousand thirty-three
13people, which is the fourth deadliest hurricane in United States history; and
14 WHEREAS, millions of people were displaced and left homeless, with more than one
15million housing units damaged or destroyed; and
16 WHEREAS, Hurricane Katrina remains the costliest hurricane on record in the
17United States, causing an estimated one hundred seventy billion dollars in total damages; and
18 WHEREAS, the storm had a profound and lasting impact on the region and its
19people, triggering one of the largest and most sudden population displacements in United
20States history; and

1 WHEREAS, approximately twelve million Louisianians were forced to relocate for
2months or even years, and with thousands never returning to their homes; and
3 WHEREAS, nearly two decades since Hurricane Katrina made landfall, the people
4of Louisiana have rebuilt their communities, yet the memories and lessons of the storm
5endure as a testament to resilience and perseverance; and
6 WHEREAS, it is fitting to formally recognize August 29th as "Katrina Day" to honor
7the memory of those lost, acknowledge the struggles of survivors, and reflect on the ongoing
8efforts to rebuild and strengthen our communities.
9 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
10commend and honor the victims of Hurricane Katrina on the twentieth anniversary of its
11landing and does hereby designate August 29th as "Katrina Day" in remembrance of those
12affected by the storm.
13 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
14mayor of New Orleans, LaToya Cantrell.
