HLS 25RS-1130 ORIGINAL 2025 Regular Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 26 BY REPRESENTATIVE CARPENTER SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH: Designates April 16, 2025, as Zeta Phi Beta Day at the state capitol 1 A RESOLUTION 2To designate Wednesday, April 16, 2025, as Zeta Phi Beta Day at the state capitol. 3 WHEREAS, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, was founded on January 16, 1920, 4at Howard University in Washington, D.C.; and 5 WHEREAS, the five coeds who founded the sorority believed that sorority elitism 6and an emphasis on socializing had previously prevented sororities from pursuing a 7progressive agenda that fully addressed the societal mores, ills, prejudices, and poverty 8affecting humanity in general and the black community in particular; and 9 WHEREAS, in contrast, the founders of Zeta Phi Beta sought to create a sorority that 10would directly affect positive change, chart a course of action for the 1920s and beyond, 11raise the consciousness of the African American people, encourage the highest standards of 12scholastic achievement, and foster a greater sense of unity among its members; and 13 WHEREAS, since its inception, Zeta Phi Beta has continued its steady climb into the 14national spotlight with programs designed to assist human beings at both the national and 15international level; and 16 WHEREAS, Zeta Phi Beta was the first National Pan-Hellenic Council organization 17to centralize its operation in a national headquarters, the first to charter a chapter in Africa, 18the first to form auxiliary groups, and the first to be constitutionally bound to a fraternity, 19namely Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated; and 20 WHEREAS, the sorority takes pride in its continued service to communities through 21volunteer services from members of the sorority and its auxiliary groups; and Page 1 of 2 HLS 25RS-1130 ORIGINAL HR NO. 26 1 WHEREAS, Zeta Phi Beta has chartered hundreds of chapters worldwide and has 2more than 100,000 members; and 3 WHEREAS, Zeta Phi Beta's local and national programs include its National 4Education Foundation outreach services; and 5 WHEREAS, Zeta Phi Beta chapters and auxiliaries have given myriad hours of 6volunteer service to educate the public, assist youth, provide scholarships, support organized 7charities, and promote legislation for social and civic change; and 8 WHEREAS, after more than one hundred years, the sorority retains its original zest 9for excellence and espouses the highest academic ideals, all of which has resulted in its 10members serving in groundbreaking roles in all fields of endeavor; and 11 WHEREAS, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., is poised for perpetual service to mankind 12through its second century and beyond. 13 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the 14Legislature of Louisiana does hereby designate Wednesday, April 16, 2025, as Zeta Phi Beta 15Day at the state capitol and hereby expresses enduring appreciation to the members of Zeta 16Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, for the tremendous service, honor, and pride that they bring 17to their families, friends, and communities, the state of Louisiana, and the United States of 18America.
