HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 43
BY REPRESENTATIVE LAFLEUR
SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH:  Designates April 23, 2025, as City Year Day at the state
capitol
1	A RESOLUTION
2To designate Wednesday, April 23, 2025, as City Year Day at the state capitol.
3 WHEREAS, City Year was founded in 1988 as a national service program to unite
4young adults from diverse backgrounds for a year of full-time community service; the
5program has since grown to more than three-thousand members who serve twenty-nine U.S.
6cities as well as the South Africa City Year and U.K. City Year programs; and
7 WHEREAS, City Year advances education equity by supporting students who are
8furthest from opportunities, and the program prioritizes national service to develop diverse
9leaders who can work in equally diverse environments; and
10 WHEREAS, City Year also delivers its fully-integrated Whole School Whole Child
11Program in public schools across the country; the program allows AmeriCorps members who
12are between eighteen and twenty-five years old to serve as student success coaches who help
13students cultivate social, emotional, and academic skills; and
14 WHEREAS, City Year Louisiana was founded in 2006 following Hurricanes Katrina
15and Rita and aimed to provide aid to children and families affected by the storms; in 2011,
16the branch divided into City Year Baton Rouge and City Year New Orleans in order to better
17serve the state; and
18 WHEREAS, City Year Baton Rouge and City Year New Orleans are now in their
19nineteenth year of service; the programs work in the East Baton Rouge Parish School
20System, Baton Rouge charter schools, and the Orleans Parish School Board; today, the

1program is delivered to over three-thousand students across Louisiana by sixty AmeriCorps
2members and twenty-three full-time staff members; and
3 WHEREAS, City Year's nonprofit services benefit both the students who are served
4and the AmeriCorps members who serve them; and
5 WHEREAS, City Year Baton Rouge is led by Dr. Luz Randolph, and City Year New
6Orleans is led by Arielle McConduit.
7 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
8Legislature of Louisiana does hereby designate Wednesday, April 23, 2025, as City Year
9Day at the state capitol and does hereby extend sincere wishes that the program continue its
10excellent work in our state for many years to come.
