LOCAL AGENCIES. Provides for term limits and qualifications for the DeSoto Parish
Police Jury. (8/1/25)
1	AN ACT
2 To enact R.S. 33:1221.3, relative to police jury; to provide relative to the police jury of
3 DeSoto Parish; to provide relative to term of office and qualifications; to provide
4 relative to limits on term of office; to provide for prospective applications; and to
5 provide for related matters.
6	Notice of intention to introduce this Act has been published.
7 Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
8 Section 1. R.S. 33:1221.3 is hereby enacted to read as follows:
9 ยง1221.3. DeSoto Parish Police Jury; term of members
10	Notwithstanding any provision of law to the contrary, no person who has
11 been elected to serve as a police juror in DeSoto Parish for more than two and
12 one-half terms in three consecutive terms shall be eligible to be a police juror
13 for the succeeding term. The limit on the number of terms a member of the
14 police jury in DeSoto Parish may serve shall be subject to approval of a
15 majority of the electors voting at an election held for that purpose.
16 Section 2. The provisions of this Act shall have prospective application only and
17 shall not apply to police jurors elected prior to the effective date of this Act.

Present law (R.S. 33:1221) provides that police jurors shall serve four year terms.
Proposed law retains present law but provides that no person who has been elected to serve
as a police juror in DeSoto Parish for more than two and one-half terms in three consecutive
terms shall be eligible to be a police juror for the succeeding term.
Proposed law provides that the limit on the number of terms a member of the police jury in
DeSoto Parish may serve shall be subject to approval of a majority of the electors voting at
an election held for that purpose.
Proposed law provides that proposed law shall have prospective application only and shall
not apply to police jurors elected prior to the effective date of proposed law.
Effective August 1, 2025.
