SPECIAL DISTRICTS. Provides for the terms of office for certain members of the
Vermilion Parish Hospital Service Districts No. 1 and No. 2. (8/1/25)
1 AN ACT
2 To amend and reenact R.S. 46:1053(K)(1) and (L)(1), relative to hospital service districts;
3 to provide relative to the Vermilion Parish Hospital Service Districts No. 1 and No.
4 2; to provide relative to the terms of office for certain members of the board of
5 commissioners; and to provide for related matters.
6 Notice of intention to introduce this Act has been published.
7 Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
8 Section 1. R.S. 46:1053(K)(1) and (L)(1) are hereby amended and reenacted to read
9 as follows:
10 ยง1053. Commission; qualification of members; appointment; vacancies;
11 compensation; removal of commissioners; certain powers

13 K.(1) In the parish of Vermilion, Hospital Service District No. 1 shall be
14 governed by a commission composed of eight members. Each chief of the medical
15 staff at the Abrom Kaplan Memorial Hospital shall be a member of the commission
16 during his term in office. The other additional members provided for by this
17 Paragraph shall be appointed for initial terms of six years each by the police jury of

1 the parish of Vermilion and thereafter shall serve six four-year terms.

3 L.(1) The Vermilion Parish Hospital Service District No. 2 shall be governed
4 by a board of commissioners composed of seven members. One member shall be
5 appointed by the parish governing authority from among the physicians who are
6 residents of the district. If no physician is willing to serve, then the parish governing
7 authority may appoint any person who is otherwise eligible to fill the office.
8 Members appointed from among the physicians of the district and members
9 appointed in place of such member shall serve two-year terms. All other members
10 shall serve six four-year terms.

Present law (R.S. 46:1053(K)(1)) provides that in the parish of Vermilion, Hospital Service

parish of Vermilion and thereafter shall serve six-year terms.
Proposed law retains present law but reduces the term of office for commissioners of
Vermilion Hospital Service District No. 1 from six-year terms to four-year terms.
Present law (R.S. 46:1053(L)(1)) provides that the Vermilion Parish Hospital Service
District No. 2 shall be governed by a board of commissioners composed of seven members.
One member shall be appointed by the parish governing authority from among the
physicians who are residents of the district. If no physician is willing to serve, then the parish
governing authority may appoint any person who is otherwise eligible to fill the office.
Members appointed from among the physicians of the district and members appointed in
place of such member shall serve two-year terms. All other members shall serve six-year
terms.
Proposed law retains present law but reduces the term of office for commissioners of
Vermilion Hospital Service District No. 2 from six-year terms to four-year terms. This
change in the term limit shall not be applicable to members appointed from among the
physicians of the district and members appointed in place of such member shall serve two-
year terms.
