Provides relative to diabetes information. (8/1/25) 1 AN ACT 2 To enact R.S. 17:436.3.1, relative to diabetes information; to provide for development of 3 certain type 1 diabetes information; to provide for distribution of the information to 4 parents and legal guardians of students; and to provide for related matters. 5 Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana: 6 Section 1. R.S. 17:436.3.1 is hereby enacted to read as follows: 7 ยง436.3.1. Type 1 diabetes information; distribution to school boards 8 A.(1) The Louisiana Department of Health shall develop and provide 9 type 1 diabetes informational materials to the state Department of Education. 10 The state Department of Education shall provide the information to each city, 11 parish, and other local public school board. 12 (2) Information provided to the school boards pursuant to this Section 13 shall include but not be limited to all of the following: 14 (a) A description of type 1 diabetes. 15 (b) A description of the risk factors and warning signs associated with 16 type 1 diabetes. 17 (c) A description of the need for screening of all students for early Page 1 of 2 Coding: Words which are struck through are deletions from existing law; words in boldface type and underscored are additions. SB NO. 26 SLS 25RS-94 ORIGINAL 1 detection of type 1 diabetes using a blood autoantibody test. 2 (d) A recommendation that a parent or guardian of a student displaying 3 warning signs associated with type 1 diabetes or positive early detection 4 screening results should immediately consult with the student's primary care 5 provider to develop an appropriate treatment plan. The treatment plan may 6 include consultation with and examination by a specialty care provider, 7 including but not limited to a properly qualified endocrinologist. 8 B. Each city, parish, and other local public school board shall distribute 9 the information to parents and legal guardians of all prekindergarten, 10 elementary, and secondary students upon enrollment and annually thereafter 11 by posting the information on school websites or by electronic distribution.
