SLS 25RS-119 ORIGINAL 2025 Regular Session SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 7 BY SENATOR FOIL COMMENDATIONS. Recognizes the Louisiana Civil Code on its bicentennial anniversary. 1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION 2 To recognize and commend the bicentennial anniversary of the Louisiana Civil Code's 3 enactment and its enduring legacy in shaping the legal foundation of the state of 4 Louisiana. 5 WHEREAS, 2025 marks the bicentennial of the Louisiana Civil Code of 1825, a 6 pivotal document in the state's history and legal tradition; and 7 WHEREAS, the Louisiana Civil Code is the foundation of this state's legal system 8 and embodies the principles of justice, equity, and civil law derived from French, Spanish, 9 and Roman influences; and 10 WHEREAS, in 1822, the Louisiana General Assembly appointed esteemed legal 11 scholars, including Louis Moreau-Lislet, Edward Livingston, and Pierre Derbigny to revise 12 the 1808 Digest of the Civil Laws, which lead to the enactment of the Louisiana Civil Code 13 of 1825; and 14 WHEREAS, the Louisiana Civil Code has played a critical role in expanding and 15 preserving individual rights and providing a structured legal framework that continues to 16 serve the citizens of Louisiana; and 17 WHEREAS, the Supreme Court of Louisiana Historical Society is sponsoring a 18 series of educational events across the state to celebrate and commemorate this historic Page 1 of 2 SCR NO. 7 SLS 25RS-119 ORIGINAL 1 milestone, with a closing gala scheduled on June 20, 2025, at the National World War II 2 Museum; and 3 WHEREAS, the Louisiana Civil Code remains one of the most important civil codes 4 of the nineteenth century and continues to influence the development of civil law traditions, 5 both in Louisiana and internationally; and 6 WHEREAS, it is appropriate to recognize and commend this significant bicentennial 7 anniversary, as well as the contributions of the legal scholars and institutions that have 8 preserved and upheld the legacy of the Louisiana Civil Code. 9 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 10 recognize and commend the bicentennial of the Louisiana Civil Code, honor its lasting 11 contributions to Louisiana's legal heritage, and recognize the role of the Louisiana Civil 12 Code in continuously guiding the administration of justice. 13 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to The 14 Steering Committee for the Commemoration of the Bicentennial of the 1825 Louisiana Civil 15 Code.
