2828 Proposal for a legislative amendment to the Constitution relative to the title of the Lieutenant
2929 Governor.
3030 A majority of all the members elected to the Senate and House of Representatives, in
3131 joint session, hereby declares it to be expedient to alter the Constitution by the adoption of the
3232 following Article of Amendment, to the end that it may become a part of the Constitution [if
3333 similarly agreed to in a joint session of the next General Court and approved by the people at the
3434 state election next following]:
3535 ARTICLE OF AMENDMENT.
3636 1 The constitution is hereby amended by striking Article I of Part the Second, Chapter II,
3737 2Section II and replacing it with the following:-
3838 3 Article I.
3939 4 There shall be elected a lieutenant governor of the commonwealth of Massachusetts,
4040 5whose title shall be, Her Honor, His Honor, or Their Honor and who shall be qualified, in point
4141 6of [religion, property,] and residence in the commonwealth, in the same manner with the
4242 7governor: and the day and manner of his election, and the qualifications of the electors, shall be
4343 8the same as are required in the election of a governor. The return of the votes for this officer, and 2 of 2
4444 9the declaration of his election, shall be in the same manner: and if no one person shall be found
4545 10to have [a majority] of all the votes returned, the vacancy shall be filled by the senate and house
4646 11of representatives, in the same manner as the governor is to be elected, in case no one person
4747 12shall have [a majority] of the votes of the people to be governor. [See Amendments, Arts. VII,
4848 13XIV, XXXIV, LXIV and LXXX.]
