2828 An Act relative to safety glass standards.
2929 Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority
3030 of the same, as follows:
3131 1 Chapter 90 is hereby amended by inserting after section 9D the following section:-
3232 2 Section 9E. (a) As used in this section, the following terms shall, unless the context
3333 3clearly requires otherwise, have the following meanings:
3434 4 “Aftermarket safety glass replacement”, motor vehicle safety glass replacement services
3535 5that occur after the original installation by a vehicle manufacturer.
3636 6 “Safety glass”, as defined in section 9A.
3737 7 (b) The registrar shall compile, maintain and publish a list, by name, of the type of glass
3838 8approved by the registrar as conforming to the specifications and requirements of safety glass as
3939 9set forth in this section. 2 of 2
4040 10 (c) The registrar shall adopt regulations establishing standards and requirements for
4141 11aftermarket safety glass replacement that:
4242 12 (i) require that the products and services used meet or exceed original equipment
4343 13manufacturer specifications;
4444 14 (ii) require the use of safety glass that meets American National Standards Institute Z
4545 1526.1 in accordance with 49 CFR § 571.205 and any other applicable federal motor vehicle safety
4646 16standards; and
4747 17 (iii) meet or exceed the standards and requirements of the the Automotive Glass
4848 18Replacement Safety Standard, developed by the Auto Glass Safety Council under the auspices of
4949 19the American National Standards Institute..
5050 20 (d) (1) The registrar shall not register any motor vehicle unless it is equipped with
5151 21approved safety glass.
5252 22 (2) The registrar shall suspend the registration of any motor vehicle that the registrar
5353 23finds is not equipped with approved safety glass until the vehicle is equipped with approved
5454 24safety glass pursuant to this section.
