2828 An Act authorizing the city of Springfield to continue the employment of police officer
2929 Lawrence E. Akers.
3030 Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority
3131 of the same, as follows:
3232 1 SECTION 1. Notwithstanding any general or special law to the contrary but subject to
3333 2chapter 6E and section 96B of chapter 41 of the General Laws, Lawrence E. Akers, a member of
3434 3the police department in the city of Springfield, may continue In his position until he reaches 70
3535 4years of age, the date of his retirement or until his non-reappointment, whichever occurs first;
3636 5provided, however, that he Is mentally and physically capable of performing the duties of his
3737 6position. The city council of the city of Springfield may, at the city's expense, require that
3838 7Lawrence E. Akers be examined annually by a physician designated by the city council to
3939 8determine his physical and mental capability to perform the duties of his position. Lawrence E.
4040 9Akers shall, while continuing to serve as a police officer in the city of Springfield: (i) maintain
4141 10certification and good standing with the Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training
4242 11Commission; and (ii) comply with all In-service and other training requirements mandated by the 2 of 2
4343 12municipal police training committee. Deductions from the regular compensation of Lawrence E.
4444 13Akers shall be made under chapter 32 of the General Laws for any service In connection with his
4545 14service to the city for retirement or pension purposes after his reaching age 65 and, upon
4646 15retirement, Lawrence E. Akers shall receive a superannuation retirement allowance.
4747 16 SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon its passage.
