26 | 26 | | Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority |
---|
27 | 27 | | of the same, as follows: |
---|
28 | 28 | | 1 SECTION 1. The General Court hereby finds and declares that: |
---|
29 | 29 | | 2 (1) aspects of the current health curriculum taught in the commonwealth negatively |
---|
30 | 30 | | 3impact students and their mental and physical health, particularly with regard to information |
---|
31 | 31 | | 4relative to nutrition and eating disorders; |
---|
32 | 32 | | 5 (2) health curriculum that requires students to analyze and track their food consumption |
---|
33 | 33 | | 6may negatively affect students’ mental, physical and emotional health and foster disordered |
---|
34 | 34 | | 7eating habits; |
---|
35 | 35 | | 8 (3) the Massachusetts comprehensive health framework was last revised in 1999 and a |
---|
36 | 36 | | 9revised framework is critical to the health and nutritional education of students in the |
---|
37 | 37 | | 10commonwealth. |
---|
38 | 38 | | 11 SECTION 2. (a) The department of elementary and secondary education shall review and |
---|
39 | 39 | | 12revise the 1999 Massachusetts comprehensive health framework with particular focus on: (i) 2 of 2 |
---|
40 | 40 | | 13revising the nutritional education curriculum to foster healthful eating and physical activity |
---|
41 | 41 | | 14through enhancing student agency and competence; (ii) increase student understanding about |
---|
42 | 42 | | 15biology, personal behavior and access to nutritional foods, including navigating modern food |
---|
43 | 43 | | 16systems, understanding food nutrition labels and addressing sedentary behavior; and (iii) |
---|
44 | 44 | | 17recognition of disordered eating and how to recognize and address the development of |
---|
45 | 45 | | 18disordered eating habits. |
---|
46 | 46 | | 19 (b) Not later than June 30, 2024, the department of elementary and secondary education |
---|
47 | 47 | | 20shall file a report with the joint committee on education detailing the proposed revisions to the |
---|
48 | 48 | | 211999 Massachusetts comprehensive health framework. |
